Shadow of War developer who died of cancer immortalised as an in-game orc slayer
A Shadow of War developer who died of cancer has been immortalised as an orc slayer in the game.
Monolith executive producer Michael Forgey, who died from a brain tumour last year aged just 43-years-old, appears in Shadow of War as DLC character Forthog Orc-Slayer.
If you have the £3.99 DLC, Forthog will on occasion appear to one-hit kill whichever enemy the player character is up against. Think the Mysterious Stranger from the Fallout series.
Forgey, who was married with three children, was a music enthusiast who played in a band made up of Monolith staff called Orc Slayer. Accordingly, Forthog Orc-Slayer wields a devastating guitar axe, which you can see in the video below. (The song was written and performed by Forgey himself.)
WB Games will donate $3.50 of every Forthog Orc-Slayer purchase to the Forgey family through 31st December 2019, Monolith said.

I think it is disrepectful the publisher monetize his memory.
All of the money received from the DLC is donated to his family.
[editline]Update[/editline]
Actually YOMIURA wasn't far off despite missing the line because the truth is a bit shadier.
This only applies to US purchases which also exclude 6 staates.
WB probably will get the rest of the sales of that DLC.
Seems to be something about local laws.
The full quote is actually:
WB will donate to the Forgey family $3.50 from every purchase of Forthog made from the U.S. (exc. AL, HI, IL, MA, MS, SC) through 2019. Void where prohibited. Purchase is not tax deductible.
Some people like Totalbiscuit call WB to simply match their non-US profits with a donation to cancer research or a similar charity if they can not take revenue directly because of some laws.

Just to clarify to anyone who thought this was a good thing.
It was a good thing when Monolith made it. Then it became bad once WB got their grubby mitts over it.
Those $3.50 of every purchase they claim goes to the family ? Mostly bullshit. It only goes to the family if the DLC is purchased within the United States (and even then some states are excluded).
You buy this anywhere outside of the US, not one penny is redirected to the family. You're effectively getting suckered out of 5 bucks for a cheat DLC by a company which outright lies to you about where your money is going, by hiding out the crucial information in a fine-print which was not reported accurately by plenty of different media outlets which did not care to look further into this and instead just parroted the press release.
Warner gets no money from it, all of it goes to charity.
edit: fuuuck.
But they are donating a good portion of the price back to the family. So it's not all bad.

it's a nice idea, but a pointless DLC. why make the game easier for yourself? and for that much?
One thing I'm confused by if the dude's character ingame is an orc or buff elf.
Half-orc, from what I can tell. Elves can't grow facial hair.
I hope we can disable that DLC if we buy that. The game is easy enough without randomly instantly killing your Nemesis.

You can disable any DLC on steam by unchecking the box

If it's anything like the Mysterious Stranger, he'll never show up when you actually need :v:.
Also killing one enemy in a game where you are easily swarmed isn't exactly OP, unless he only targets Leaders.
Doesn't Steam also get a cut of the profits on sales, meaning purchases of this DLC through Steam pay EVEN LESS to Monolith?
Doesn't Steam also get a cut of the profits on sales, meaning purchases of this DLC through Steam pay EVEN LESS to Monolith?
Essentially, yes. Since Valve gets a cut due to the game being sold through Steam, plus the $3.50-per-sale donation that gets cut out as well, the cut Monolith would actually get would be smaller (though I'm not sure by how much, I suck at math and don't know what percentage Valve takes per sale).

So they only donate part of their revenue from a bunch of regions of a single country and profit of the death of one of their employees everywhere else? Why not just include the memorial in the game instead of profiting from a tragic event?
This is so disgustingly unethical, I'm definitely not buying any WB game ever again.

I think the DLC is more than 3.50, I saw some discussion about this earlier. The 3.50 being what was left over after taxes and other fees.

To be fair the US is most certainly their largest market
[editline]1st September 2017[/editline]
I imagine they didn't want to go through the effort of making this applicable outside of the states. Never heard of this law when Sega did something similar.
Though the funds are going to a family and not a charity.
this is beautiful of them to do, damn.
as DLC
That's cynical as fuck
why even charge and just donate profits of the game overall? have him in the game as a special sidequest giver or something, not as a fucking cheat code
this is beautiful of them to do, damn.
monolith is dead.
This is a fantastic way to honor someones memory, although I am not a fan of it being DLC.
Just to clarify to anyone who thought this was a good thing.

Couldn't they have just made him a human, don't get me wrong its a nice way to memorialize him but seeing a human face on an orc body just looks odd.
Rememer, you can pre-order this dlc, for good measure.
Fucking really?
