WHO ARE THE PROTOMEN?
The Protomen are a group of grown men and one woman in silver facepaint pretending to be robots. Based out of Nashville, the Protomen go on tours performing their albums in dramatic, theatrically loud concerts.

PROTOMEN? LIKE, THE MEGAMAN GUY?
Yup. Their albums are a rock opera very loosely based off of the first few Megaman games. And when I say loosely, I mean very VERY loosely.
Imagine one side of this rope is Megaman 3 and the other side is The Protomen.
WHAT ALBUMS HAVE THEY PUT OUT?
They’ve only made 3 albums, and only 2 are actually about Megaman.

Act I: The Protomen (Hope Rides Alone)
A gritty, chiptuny adventure. If you’re a quality freak, you may want to brace yourself, because this sound is dirty. Not that that’s a bad thing at all.

Act II: The Father of Death
Oh yeah. This is it. Mixing western with the 80s, Father of Death is a joyride of styles and music. I personally recommend How The World Fell Under Darkness, for a nice instrumental sampler. No actual robot masters here, but there’s Sniper Joe!

The Protomen Present: A Night of Queen
One night The Protomen thought it’d be a great idea to play a bunch of Queens jams, record them, then sell them on a CD a year or so later. And how right they were. Even less Megaman here, folks, but don’t let that discourage you from buying it several times and giggling like a maniac.

UH, IS THERE A PLOT OR SOMETHING? (aka: Do you ever think about robots and get sad?)
The plot behind The Protomen’s two Megaman related albums happens in chronological order over three albums. Two that have been released and one that hasn’t (Acts I, II, and III.)
Act I: The Protomen - Dr. Wily has taken hold of The City in an iron grip, similar to Big Brother from 1984. He controls the populace of The City through fear and a giant army of ruthless robots that enforce his laws and rules. Dr. Light is simply a disenfranchised old man who lives in a run-down apartment building. He spends his nights building the perfect machine to bring down Wily’s regime, Protoman. As soon as Protoman’s construction is finished, he releases him, and Protoman immediately begins the fight against Dr. Wily’s robot masters; however, he is defeated. Dr. Light then constructs Megaman, as a replacement for the son he sent to death. Megaman rebels against Dr. Light’s wishes that he not fight, and runs away to fight Dr. Wily’s evil army. After reaching Dr. Wily’s tower in the middle of the city, Megaman encounters Protoman, his brother, whom he had thought died when he fought Dr. Wily. It turns out that Protoman had merely defected to Wily’s side after realizing that humanity would never rise up to fight for itself. After all, why should he fight for those who would not fight for themselves? Megaman and Protoman then fight each other, Megaman is forced to kill Protoman, and afterwards, abandons humanity and The City, as he walks away from the battle, he simply states “You are the dead.” leaving humanity to be demolished by Wily’s forces.
Act II: The Father of Death - Happening before Act I, the album starts off with Dr. Light speaking about how his father died in a mine accident, and how he learned to make robots that could do these jobs instead of humans. It then switches to Dr. Wily and Dr. Light (partners at this time) arguing over whether they should turn the robots on or not, as it could either boost humanity, or doom them. Dr. Wily wins the argument, and they turn the robots on. Dr. Wily takes control of the robots, and uses them to increase his influence within The City. He then uses the robots to completely renovate The City, and since there are no longer any jobs to be done by humans, humanity becomes apathetic and lazy. In a plot to take control of The City, Dr. Wily murders Dr. Light’s fiance Emily A. Stanton. Dr. Light is put on trial for the murder, but is declared innocent by the judge and rigged jury. He becomes a public pariah and is exiled to the Western Wasteland. After his exile, he meets a young man named Joe who wants to rebel against Dr. Wily. They make a plan to destroy the main telescreen, which Wily is using to control The City. Joe blows up the telescreen, but is killed in the process. Dr. Light swears revenge, takes the Joe helmet, and walks off into the darkness.
Act III: ??? - All we know about Act III is that it will (mostly) take place outside of The City, and will focus on Megaman. We also know that it includes at least one unknown new character, a female (likely Roll, Megaman’s sister). This will be the final album in the Megaman/Protoman series, and will likely “not end well for humanity”, as Panther has put it.

ANYTHING ELSE I SHOULD KNOW?
Helmets. Helmets helmets helmets. If you go to a concert of theirs, you are probably going to see one of these sexy hunks of plastic. Here’s a handy identification chart for telling who’s singing what and/or why the fuck did I search Protoman on DA and get Breakman instead.

Megaman
Fun Facts: Was not always this shitty looking! But 6+ years of battles (read: concerts) can take its toll on a helmet. Other than that, it’s exactly what it seems.

Protoman
Fun Facts: There is a microphone inside the helmet! They plug it into the back of the head so Panther can sing. Trust me, I’ve worn one of these things. No one can hear you speak.

Sniper Joe
Fun Fact: It lights up! Cylon in a motorcycle helmet and leather jacket. What’s not to love?
SO WHAT ARE THEIR CONCERTS LIKE, THEN?
Good question! If you don’t mind minor spoilers for the series, you can watch an entire concert here: http://www.twitch.tv/pax/b/330659359

FINAL NOTES
This thread was made because the MSPA thread has become sort of an unofficial thread for these guys. So we just cut out the lame Homestuck part and left what was cool: The Protomen. There was an old thread but it was like two pages and the last post was July and ugh. It was bad and now it's dead so we made a robot out of its decaying corpse so you can have fun again. So you’ll probably see a bunch of Homestuck stuff here, don’t worry, it’s normal. Keep it to a minimum, though, guys. We don’t want to ruin the good image of The Protomen.

as for something actually related, this is pretty much my favorite band at the moment. They got me into megaman, and shit that's a great game. Just, so fuckin great. I also listened to Act II everyday for about 2 weeks. And then I did the same with Act I. This band is fantastic.
bass is a terrible robot and I'm glad he's not in this band
needs more ultra-angsty Protomen brand Zero
because he'd be p badass
I mean just listen to his theme:

so am i the only one who thinks panther acts fucking hilarious onstage
All of the guys are pretty awesome in concert. They're acting, and playing music. It's a different experience.
protomen is good if u don't listen to them u are officially awful
FUCKING gastrictank
Well, I just decided to listen to both of the albums in their entirety for the first time. [sp]Holy shit that was amazing they need to make a movie or a broadway version or something when they get done with Act III.[/sp]
But yeah, I would kill to get one of those sexy helmets.
i would pay in blood to go see a broadway version of Acts I, II, and III.
I went to see them a few months ago with Powerglove. It was fucking badass despite the venue being shit. Very fun experience.
I have a feeling act 3 will have X in it.

Some claim Panther always wears sunglasses because his gaze will hypnotize the average human.
Some claim Panther always wears sunglasses because his gaze will hypnotize the average human.
Panther takes the sunglasses off a bunch, though. I think you're thinking of KILROY.
Panther takes the sunglasses off a bunch, though. I think you're thinking of KILROY.
No, I meant panther.
Disasterous things are what happens if KILROY's face is revealed.
(see: raiders of the lost ark)
I have to catch these guys live sometime otherwise my life won't be worth living
They need to do another East Coast tour.
Needs more love for the s/t

This is my favorite song by them. I really want to act this out when I finish my Protoman cosplay.
I really hope that Act III will be more like the first one rather than the second one.
The second one was fine and all, but really lacked the dark feeling that fits the universe.
I thought Act II was pretty dark, it was just the '80s rock opera sheen that glossed over it a little bit. It's kind of depressing, too. Both albums have such bleak endings.

Its actually surprisingly rare to find concept albums that have good endings.
Its actually surprisingly rare to find concept albums that have good endings.
Here's hoping Act III has a conclusive ending, at least.

We can do it at Otakon. Pretty sure I can finish my megaman cosplay in 10 months.

They've said in an email mailer that it doesn't look like things are gonna end well for humanity.
Saw them in Seattle a couple days after PAX. Was the best show I've been to. Sure it was full of smelly, awkward chainmail/fadora wearing unwashed nerds but the ones who couldn't call that concert their first concert really brought it. Was a fucking blast.
