The Nintendo Switch games console has outsold its predecessor, just 10 months after its launch. Nintendo sold 7.23 million Switch consoles in the previous quarter, bringing total sales to about 14.86 million devices. The Wii U, which went on sale in November 2012, sold 13.56 million units before it was discontinued in 2017 and was considered a commercial failure. Nintendo reported its most profitable quarter since 2009. The company announced an operating profit of 116.50 billion yen (£755m, $1.07 billion), up from 32.26 billion yen a year ago. It said it expected Switch sales to reach 20 million this year and said a Pokemon game would be released for the Switch "in 2018 or later". Super Mario Odyssey was the best-selling game for the Nintendo Switch, with 9.07 million copies sold since it was released in October. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - a rerelease of a Wii U title - has sold 7.33 million copies, with launch title The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild selling 6.70 million. Splatoon 2 - a sequel to one of Nintendo's newest original properties - sold 4.91 million copies.
BBC To put Mario Odyssey's success into context:
I bought a Wii u about a year before the switch's announcement :frown:

That's not a very impressive comparison tbh, it's Battlefront 2.
well deserved
That's very impressive, it's Battlefront 2!
That's not a very impressive comparison tbh, it's Battlefront 2.
Switch lifetime sales are 15~ million. The game is a single exclusive. It was up against a multiplatform title of a known IP, being sold to a market that has hundreds of millions of potential customers. 9 million sales on a platform that only 15 million people have.
I'm glad to see Nintendo going back up again.
I bought a Wii u about a year before the switch's announcement :frown:
It's a good console with great games, it just had poor marketing.
It's a good console with great games, it just had poor marketing.
And a bad name, a bad concept and a bad design edit: all of those disagreeing, it's true. The name was so bad people kept confusing it to be a Wii addon. The concept was so bad that even devs didn't know what to do with it. A game like Splatoon couldn't even be played solely on the gamepad and the screen always ran simultaneously to the TV, even when playing with the Pro controller. The design of it felt cheap and very childish and nowhere attractive. The Switch does not have any of these issues. Marketing is aimed primarily at young adults. It has a fitting and good name. The concept is as simple as it can get and the design is modern and sleek.
Jesus, that's just mind boggling. Guess the Wii U really was a failure if the Switch beat it so soundly in less than a year. Guess its a good thing that some of the Wii U's more popular titles are ending up on the Switch now. The Wii U may have been a pretty shitty system but it had some arguably really good games on it, now they don't have to die with the console. Good for you Nintendo, glad to see the Switch is doing great and has a productive life ahead of it. I really wanna see about getting one sometime this year. Since its already got some damn fine titles on it and only more are coming.
Am I the only one who thinks that Mario Odyssey was a super dumbed down version of Sunshine or the N64 version? It was too easy that it was just boring, and the game was super short as well...
Am I the only one who thinks that Mario Odyssey was a super dumbed down version of Sunshine or the N64 version?
Probably yes. There may be many easy to get moons but there are also very hard ones in post game.
game was super short as well...
The game doesn't end until you reach the ending of Darker Side.

I want them to fully remaster twilight princess so bad
and the game was super short as well...
Pffft, I bet you beat SM64 with only 70 stars too
I still know people who constantly say shit like NINTENDO IS FINISHED, THEY CAN'T RECOVER FROM THIS
I still know people who constantly say shit like NINTENDO IS FINISHED, THEY CAN'T RECOVER FROM THIS
Doesn't Nintendo have enough raw cash to survive for like decades
Nintendo's on the way out guys

Glad to see this. I bought a U at release and held onto it hoping for good games, but everything was just hd remakes of Wii games. I sold it and bought a standard wii, i get just as much enjoyment from it.
Doesn't Nintendo have enough raw cash to survive for like decades
They can last for 30 years before having to actually sell stock
I hope the WiiU Zelda HD games come to switch because fuck it I want more portable home console zeldas
Honestly, WWHD and TPHD are incredible improvements over their originals, and I'm just talking about for speed runs either, at least WWHD is. Having those 2 and a Skyward Sword HD would be incredible. Especially if SSw gets nice QoL improvements the other HD games got.
I bought a Wii u about a year before the switch's announcement :frown:
I love my Wii U and I think it's still worth getting mainly for hacking it at this point. A hacked Wii U can run NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube (perfectly in every game I've played on it), Wii, Wii U, Gameboy - Gameboy Advance, other emulators, and DS games where the top screen is the TV and the bottom screen is the gamepad. It's a very cool all-in-one Nintendo system.

probably not the case if you include digital copies but still awesome to see for physical copies
probably not the case if you include digital copies but still awesome to see for physical copies
Pretty sure those Battlefront numbers include digital copies, articles referencing that number also break down how many of those sales were digital.
How did Odyssey sell more copies than Battlefront 2? Quite impressive...
How did Odyssey sell more copies than Battlefront 2? Quite impressive...
they finished it before releasing it
Pretty excited to see the future of the switch. BOTW and Odyssey were killer; that upcoming Pokemon RPG has me hyped for the first time in a long time.
they finished it before releasing it
and didn't fuck every customer over
Nintendo's on the way out guys
Should have gone the way of Sega so we can have Mario on Xbox and Playstation.
