It’s easy to think that Star Wars: Battlefront II is the sole result of Electronic Arts‘ work. That publisher taken the lead on developing and promoting the sci-fi shooter, which is available now on PC and consoles. But Lucasfilm is involved with everything. “Yeah, that’s very much true,” Luasfilm brand boss Douglas Reilly told GamesBeat last week. “We have a games team here that I run, that meets with all of our partners, and particularly we spend a lot of time with EA, both on the marketing side and the production teams. We bring in Lucasfilm’s story team to help us shape and build the stories we’re telling, so they fit in the continuity of all the other things we’re doing with the Star Wars universe. So yes, we’re very hands-on.” That involved strategy has the two companies spending a lot of time together. “In general, we’ll have weekly meetings between the production teams and the marketing teams, with either EA in Redwood Shores or the individual teams in Stockholm and Montreal and Vancouver, wherever they have studios,” said Reilly. “We have weekly meetings. Then we regularly go and visit in person, probably once a quarter, to sit with them, play builds of the games, walk through progress and where we’re going in the future. We’re constantly talking, meeting, and engaging with them in a very collaborative way.” During those meetings, Lucasfilm would spend time giving feedback on unfinished versions of the game, or it might try to plan out the future with EA. “Sometimes it’s, hey, where are we going with postlaunch content? Or a game that we haven’t even announced yet,” said Reilly. “Sometimes it’s big strategic thinking and sometimes it’s all the way down to tactical — ‘hey, we need reference for this particular vehicle or model’ — that kind of conversation. It runs the gamut all the way from the most truly mundane to the highest levels of, what kind of stories do we tell and how do we want to tell them?” As for Battlefront II, Reilly sees the collaboration as the proud result of Lucasfilm and EA’s relationship. “We’ve come together to create something that I think is a very unique, authentic, broad experience that allows you to have a story campaign, play in multiple planets across multiple eras, with a huge set of heroes and other characters,” he said. “I think it’s a testament, actually, to our ability to work together toward that vision, when you see the end product.”
VentureBeat An interview is contained within
Please take EA's rights away, before they ruin your IP further. Star Wars should be given to many deserving studios and publishers, not just the worst of them all. There are at least 6 studios still alive that could make a great Star Wars game, without cynical cash grabbing.
I wish Raven was still around so we could get a Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy sequel
There are at least 6 studios still alive that could make a great Star Wars game, without cynical cash grabbing.
Can't have 21st century Star Wars without cynical cash grabs, mate. It's a part of the canon universe now.
If they have meetings that often, doesn't that imply Disney may have had a hand in crafting the cockup micro transactions? I mean I hope not, but after seeing shit like C3PO showing up in one of their kids shows to tell the main characters to "Step off, fool" within a few weeks of getting the rights, it wouldn't be that much of a stretch.
I wish Raven was still around so we could get a Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy sequel
They are, they just work mostly on CoD now. So that means Activision would have to get Star Wars and I dunno if everyone would like that
I wish Raven was still around so we could get a Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy sequel
Give me some form of Kyle Katarn-based narrative.

Plus on paper, I doubt anyone could ever known it was going to be this bad
If y'all think this is new for star wars and lucasfilm, just go take a look at the mobile games. I don't doubt that they absolutely had a hand in suggesting their mobile business model for bf2
They are, they just work mostly on CoD now. So that means Activision would have to get Star Wars and I dunno if everyone would like that
Star Wars: the Call of Duty And it'd be the same as all the other COD games with a Star Wars aesthetic bleagh no thanks.
Platinum makes a Darth Maul game. Our world instantly becomes a better place.
Can't have 21st century Star Wars without cynical cash grabs, mate. It's a part of the canon universe now.
It's unfortunately, really. [t]http://i.imgur.com/lcsoaEl.jpg[/t] Yes I know it's based on a prototype of Kenner's and is probably not in the film, but I'm betting Lucasfilm sat down with TLG and agreed to it being released.
Disney only approved the current system because it was* quickly becoming the industry standard. What's happening now is the result of public backlash. All your points are true; EA will end up taking the fall.
Not much of a surprise. I'm still inclined to put the brunt of the blame from BFII's issues on EA but Disney is still partially culpable for allowing this to happen in the first place. Ultimately I just hope they end up backing down now that it's putting their reputation on the line.
It's unfortunately, really. So I went to check just now and the microtransactions in the mobile games are also called crystals. Heroes in particular allows you to buy crystals which allows you to get "Data Cards" (lootboxes) and you open them to get a randomized set of items. Give rights to Valve. They wont fuck it up because we will never see it :v: Can't fuck up if there is nothing to fuck up.
Interesting. It’s like they’re only letting the Empire make a game about the Rebels
I've heard the game itself is good .. if you look past the grinding, imbalance and obv money grab. I do wonder what Disney is going to do: A) Remove the IP and close the game .. refund everyone and an awesome game is lost. (Along with a lot of money) B) Remove micro-transactions completely and re-balance the game (Something that would be really costly for both EA and Disney). Don't think they'll earn much and they might be forced to pump out DLC's, using every penny on fixing the game. C) Give the IP to another company. (Kinda hard as the game is made in EA DICE's Frostbite 3 engine) My guess would be B, until the game is in a semi-good state and swept under a rug.
why are people rushing to believe that fucking Disney of all people is innocent in all of this it was probably a big part their idea in the first place

It has packs that can drop shards of a particular character, and chance of you getting one are to my knowledge equal but random, it's just the amount you can get is absolutely shit compared to what you have to pay to give a go with that rng.
The difference being that these are free to play games. it is the non-F2P games that are the problem.
of course, it was more to point out that lucasfilm and disney are no stranger to microtransactions, even down to the level of calling their premium currency the same thing across all titles
The difference being that these are free to play games. it is the non-F2P games that are the problem.
Tbh I don't get this mindset. A lot of free to play games like warthunder and world of tanks ruin themselves by making their f2p models awful. Likewise, I don't inherently mind if a paid game has microtransactions either. In both cases it entirely depends on implementation.
of course, it was more to point out that lucasfilm and disney are no stranger to microtransactions, even down to the level of calling their premium currency the same thing across all titles
Good point. If we could get people to start complaining about gambling in F2P Star Wars games as well games. [editline]26th November 2017[/editline] I play both SWTOR and Star Trek Online, F2P MMOs with a standard cash shop, but also 'loot boxes'. I think they do it fine, SWTOR even more so because most of the stuff in the boxes are cosmetic. Like, there are weapons in the SWTOR boxes, but they just have basic stats, most of their stats come from you putting modifications on them.

Let Obsidian make a game again, come on
