Drunk Welshman thought to be first person to survive swimming across Hoover Dam
A man from north Wales has been fined $330 (€276) by American police after he swam across the Hoover Dam on a stag do, apparently making himself the first person to make it across the reservoir alive.
Arron Hughes, a 28-year-old forklift driver, had reportedly been partying for 37 hours in Nevada when he decided to jump into the water and swim across it.
“It was around 45-40 degrees outside and we were on a stag do in Vegas. You go to Vegas to have fun, don’t you? We made The Hangover look tame,” he told the Daily Post.
“We were all just standing there, and I thought, f*** it! I’m going for a swim.”

He said the swim took around 30 minutes but admitted he felt “knackered” half way across, but knew he had to make it to the other side as he could feel the water pulling him towards the dam.
The forklift driver is only thought to have survived as nine of the dam’s 10 turbines were switched off at the time.

“One officer said, ‘In my whole lifetime I’ve never seen or heard of anyone doing it’,” Mr Hughes told MailOnline, while admitting his decision to go for a swim had been “fuelled by drink”.
Some 275 people have reportedly died at the site in the last 10 years.
“I don’t have any regrets,” Mr Hughes told the BBC. “I even have a tattoo saying ‘no regrets,’ that’s the type of person I am.”

The welsh sure are something different.
You'd be too busy being dead to have regrets anyway...

Unless you become crippled for life.
10 Luck Courier is no joke
The Drunkards of Britannia will never backdown from a challenge...
I've never really heard anything about the Welsh that didn't involve something fucking crazy. And I have Welsh relatives.

This really sticks out to me. I mean, I know some people just can't be saved from their own idiocy, but almost 30 people dying a year in the same spot is pretty insane.
It would've been very baad if those turbines were on, he'd have been turned to mince mutton.

Some will have been suicides or non-accident related but I get your point.
I didn't know the area was so deadly
Id be more worried about the Ichthyosaurs lurking below the surface than the already terrifying turbiines.

I will NEVER be found in water with visibility below 10 meters. Fuck the ichthyosaurs.
Am Welsh. Can confirm that this the northern Welsh are usually like :v:

I dunno from living in Wales all my life seems more often than not incest or bestiality involving sheep.
37 hours of partying... Christ...

Those are rookie numbers
were it but for the flap of a butterfly's wings, this story could have been a lot more morbid

Putting it like that, makes one think there would be more gambling.

he gambled with his life and won

Here's a photo I took at the dam this year. I spotted an employee on the lower level. Falls during dumb poses/trespassing and suicides are probably most of the numbers.

There are usually intense currents at the outlet that would pull you around like a bath toy. He lucked out.

So wait did he do it at the top or the bottom?

Top. If it was the bottom, the outlet, he wouldn't have been pulled towards the dam.
The thought of being in water and pulled into dark-ass turbine under water is fucking terrifying.
Well luckily for you, you can avoid that by not swimming near massive Hydroelectric dams.
Kind of wonder why the majority of the turbines were switched off, for maintenance or something? I really can't see a different reason why they would be shut down.

I heard that's also a biggest problem/fear for underwater welders? Where they can weld/cut something that has no water inside it - so when it opens up the water sucks them in and they get trapped, that is also terrifying.
But still, Turbine Suck in scarier :v:

Kinda like that video of the crab getting sucked into a 0.3mm crack in a pipe. Nasty.

That is, if you're deep enough for such pressure difference

Not seen that, do I want to?

You just open the grate with a valve in one of the control towers and the pipe just spits you out unharmed. Mind the angry Apache helicopter though.

Hookers

And drugs

Ever seen Tom and Jerry?
Where Tom gets pulled into drain or through keyhole?
That's pretty much crab video :v:
I really fucking doubt that he partied for 37 hours and then went for this swim.
