Silicon Valley’s $400 Juicer revealed to be unnecessary after journalist uses their hands instead
One of the most lavishly funded gadget startups in Silicon Valley last year was Juicero Inc. It makes a juice machine. The product was an unlikely pick for top technology investors, but they were drawn to the idea of an internet-connected device that transforms single-serving packets of chopped fruits and vegetables into a refreshing and healthy beverage.
Doug Evans, the company’s founder, would compare himself with Steve Jobs in his pursuit of juicing perfection. He declared that his juice press wields four tons of force—“enough to lift two Teslas,” he said. Google’s venture capital arm and other backers poured about $120 million into the startup. Juicero sells the machine for $400, plus the cost of individual juice packs delivered weekly. Tech blogs have dubbed it a “Keurig for juice.”
But after the product hit the market, some investors were surprised to discover a much cheaper alternative: You can squeeze the Juicero bags with your bare hands. Two backers said the final device was bulkier than what was originally pitched and that they were puzzled to find that customers could achieve similar results without it. Bloomberg performed its own press test, pitting a Juicero machine against a reporter’s grip. The experiment found that squeezing the bag yields nearly the same amount of juice just as quickly—and in some cases, faster—than using the device.
Later, Juicero's new CEO came out with a statement to NOT squeeze the bags:
First, the Press. Our connected Press itself is critical to delivering a consistent, high quality and food safe product because it provides:
The first closed loop food safety system that allows us to remotely disable Produce Packs if there is, for example, a spinach recall. In these scenarios, we’re able to protect our consumers in real-time.
Consistent pressing of our Produce Packs calibrated by flavor to deliver the best combination of taste and nutrition every time.
Connected data so we can manage a very tight supply chain, because our product is live, raw produce, and has a limited lifespan of about 8 days.
what an embarrassment tbh

I feel this is like 80% of the kickstarter shit I see popping up as facebook ads
Look at this shit! Its the new thing in town!
And you pay a fuckton of money for some useless flying selfie drone
I get why it's stupid, but I don't get the complaining. It does what it says on the tin, you got a juicer that's connected to the internet of shit, and uses a bunch of proprietary bags instead of DRM-free fruit from your local grocer.
There are so many ways that you can "fix" an issue that doesn't exist using "advanced" and modern technologies
and 100% of the time, if the solution is brainlessly simple, the advanced solution creates insane and needless issues just trying to fix the issue that doesn't exist
Just like wifi features that are useless. The more connected you make everything the more confusing everything becomes.
Fuck all these stupid startups, I hope they go bust along with all the private equity/venture capital firms investing in them.
another startup which is just scam for the investor money ...
stealing it from the pool of really innovative ones ...
It's a juicer, which can only juice pre-packaged ingredients, why.

I never thought I would see the day when we could consider fruit "DRM-free".

I do wonder with all these stupid start-ups if we're looking at another Dot Com bubble. The Dot Com bubble was defined by dumb start-ups
The amount of startups where you have to buy their specific capsules or bags or whatever for it to work is absolutely boggling. Don't people know that the whole point is for you to spend way too much on individual servings without realising?
It's a juicer, which can only juice pre-packaged ingredients, why.
Because they can make a bank on selling DRM juice bags, that's the only reason why.
Where's the DLC
Born too early to explore space.
Born too late to explore the earth.
Born just in time to explore the morality of pirating a juice machine.
We cyberpunk now.
I don't get why such a thing would get so much funding in the first place. Is it actually cheaper than just buying a regular juicer, raw fruit & vegetables, and juicing it yourself? Healthier that way too.
I find it oddly satisfying whenever a dumb startup like this fails for an even dumber reason.
Its pretty weird knowing that the machine can reject any bag you fit in because of "consumer safety" while in reality its just a goddamn DRM mechanism so you only buy their bags

Ya ain't born too early to explore space, ya just can't accept the fact that you'd never have been qualified enough for it. :v:

A juicer is like 60€ if you don't want anything fancy, and even a 'slow juicer' is available for probably around 250€ with shipping here.
That's not counting just doing it by hand with kitchen utensils that probably cost less than 20€ total at 'almost indestructible' quality.
Juicero packs are $30+ for five glasses worth of juice, which is a little cheaper than restaurant beverage pricing, but otherwise outrageously expensive.
I'm pretty sure you can get the matching amount of fruit for less than half of that even at low juice yield.
I suppose the question is whether the time to prepare these drinks is worth that much to you. To me it really isn't.

What a time to be alive.
Why buy a printer when you can use the ink directly? (really bad analogy and excuse)

WHAT?! I actually thought the shits Kickstarter ads shown in Facebook were cool although a little pricey.
Of course there are still some really scummy junks like most "next-gen" luxury wear wannabes.
Why the fuck does a juicer need to be connected to the internet
Which leads on to why the fuck are there smart fridges. This whole IoT crap needs to fuck off im so puzzled as to why we need it
Product recalls? Seriously? It's just so they can sell data to other companies and make more money.
When will I get a smart rice cooker that only accepts the manufactures bag, it has android on it and can watch Netflix while I'm waiting for my rice to boil
If it just squeezes juice out of a packet it isn't even a juicer either. This is just a mechanical press.
Are people in Silicone Valley completely stupid?
wait, this is a juicer

this wifi juicer is a capri sun auto squeezer
Why is IoT the hottest new meme now for all these dumb startups? IoT umbrellas, IoT refrigerators, IoT door locks, an IoT juicer. What's next, an IoT microwave?
My biggest problem with IoT is that every single implementation of it in a device feels like a pointless gimmick but somehow the entire functionality of the device runs off of it. Like you can only ever interface with them by using some shitty awful and poorly designed Android app.
Yeah that's what I want, a dozen apps on my phone for all the IoT devices I have. Web interfaces would be so much better but I've only heard of a few actually useful things use them, like IoT HVAC to remotely control the thermostat.

My Zojirushi rice cooker talks to me already, even says hello. When I got the machine the language was still set to Japanese. I felt like Tom Cruise in Edge of Tomorrow, and I swear it uses the exact same voice as the mech suits in the movie.

My roommate has one of those but it just plays twinkle twinkle little star when finished

Wait what the fuck
You don't put in your own shit and then have it squeeze it? What's the fucking point then, who would buy it?
