National Public Radio tweeted out the Declaration of Independence on Tuesday to mark the July Fourth holiday, but not everyone understood what it was doing.
Some supporters of President Donald Trump didn’t recognize one of the nation’s founding documents and accused the broadcaster of inciting violence and even revolution.
They read it on the radio every year
How can you be this stupid
people react to a strange series of tweets!
What's revolutionary here is that this even qualifies as a headline nowadays. What a world we live in.
This is actually more sad than it is funny, when people forget about one of the defining documents of our country and its contents; it only furthers the interests/powers of those who wish to corrode our democracy.

Most people can't name a single fucking senator or justice, do you really expect them to know the Declaration based off a single text snippet? Also, what

Yes, because shit like this is taught in our schools. People ought to know their laws, etc.
Else people get caught up in identity politics or [del]bribed[/del] lobbied politicians rise to power.
We truly are in the age of irony
I'll admit it's a little amusing to see Trump supporters react defensively to the parts which I assume are talking about the king (?) being a dictator, but tbh it's a weird thing to post on such a short form medium.
Of course the vague writing is going to be taken out of context when you see it in parts.
They should have actually read it off in a video tbh
posting all those posts was dumb beyond fuck

They read it on air, the tweets were a side thing.
He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.
Please tell me somebody interpreted this to be trump related somehow.
They read it on air, the tweets were a side thing.
if you look at their twitter you'll see how much they've spammed
imagine actually having them in your followed list and having to scroll through that shit
shouldn't have been a thing at all. We have twitlonger for this shit

Not past 3rd grade, at least not where I went to school.
That's fucking hilarious
my sides are practically in orbit, imagine being dumb enough to take that tweet as a direct attack on the orange cheeto
my sides are practically in orbit, imagine being dumb enough to take that tweet as a direct attack on the orange cheeto
just goes to show that by their logic, anything said by anyone not directly connected to the trump administration deserves to be ridiculed
People got baited hardcore. To be fair I don't know it off the top of my head, but you'd have thought people could put two and two together.

I mean, if they're going to be politically outspoken, then... yes? Fine, Johnny Trumpet doesn't know a thing about our nation's history, political system, or major figures. So, Johnny Trumpet should keep his god damn mouth shut when it comes to matters of politics.
Basically: if you don't know what the hell you're talking about, don't voice your opinion like it's correct.

So your country loves your Declaration of Independence to a ludicrous degree, when things in it are questioned (like guns) a common response is no it's in the declaration, you can't change the declaration. Then when parts of the declaration are posted people go mad and act like it's ridiculous. Choose to believe this is a message you like, that Americans unquestionably believe in the declaration despite not knowing what's in it, that the declaration is outdated and is mostly ridiculous in the context of the modern world. Whatever, whatever, I'm sure there's more things to take away from this. But it seems you guys ought to discuss it more.

Not like that has ever dissuaded anyone, especially in the realm of politics. Many voters have opinions on things they know nothing about, and the more ignorant they are, the more opinions they have.

if it were only that easy, though. We are going through a post truth era in this world in matters of politics, with facts counting for precisely fuck all in a charged climate among those who will not listen. Sure there were a few cases when supporters of Trump bailed out after watching him fuck up again and again, but most of them still support him by doubling down because they can't bear to see their own delusions examined under a critical eye because it might break them.
And an opinion's like an asshole anyway, everybody has at least one.

I think you're confusing the Declaration of Independence with the United States Constitution when it comes to guns.

Ahh fair enough. My bad, I'm English, can't claim to be an expert on America. Will say though, that I guess what I said applies to either one(?)

The issue is nobody takes the time to educate themselves and just listen to their "preferred media source". To add to this they surround themselves with people who only parrot what they want to hear.
I feel with Social Media it's become a lot easier to just hole yourself up and live in your own little bubble.
Really goes to show that these American "patriots" really know dick all.
Honestly, I think it's more damning that people are able to make direct correlations to Trump and that which is said in the Declaration to begin with.
Really goes to show that these American "patriots" really know dick all.
Aren't you glad they're allowed to vote and make decisions that affect our entire country and the lives of the 320+ million people that live here?
They couldn't pass a citizenship test if you gave them one or recite the basics of American history, but they're still totally fit to be part of our democracy lol.

Everyone is allowed to vote, and I don't think that should ever be taken away.
That's a pretty clever thing to do. I'm glad I pay taxes for this.
[Editline]Jesus fuck u guys[/Editline]
This isn't snark. I'm being serious, folks.
Everyone is allowed to vote, and I don't think that should ever be taken away.
Cool. Now you know why our government and society are so fucked up.
Democracy fails when its citizens are allowed to be absurdly uninformed yet still make decisions about things which are clearly beyond their capabilities. Worse still, we have a culture that fosters the belief that opinions are just as valuable as facts are; it's a tactful way of saying, "My ignorance is just as good as others' knowledge," which simply isn't true. I don't think you'll see this anywhere clearer than in the climate change debate, for example. People who normally would go to the doctor if they had a medical issue or go to a mechanic if their car had a problem think they know more than actual educated and experienced scientists who spend their lives studying it do. That's a serious barrier when it comes to creating and enacting policy.
Birthright democracy has a shitload of problems, and that's what makes it so dangerously self-destructive-- especially when you're dealing with people like this who reacted so irrationally against NPR on Twitter. You can bet that these people are politically-active. The loudest ones always are.
Voting, forming political opinions, and participating in government are skills dude. They have to be learned and cultivated, yet we don't treat them like skills for some bizarre reason. So in the end, this is what we wind up with.
That's a pretty clever thing to do. I'm glad I pay taxes for this.
Considering NPR is one of the only factual and relatively unbiased news outlets left in the United States, I'm glad I used to pay taxes for this.
