• Indian cult followers win fight to keep dead guru in freezer
An Indian court has granted permission for the followers of a long-dead spiritual guru to preserve his body in a freezer. Ashutosh Maharaj, founder of the sect Divya Jyoti Jagriti Sansthan (Divine Light Awakening Mission), died of a suspected heart attack in January 2014. But his followers insist he is only meditating deeply, and will one day return to life. Shortly after his death in 2014, the guru's spokesman Swami Vishalanand told the BBC: "He is not dead. Medical science does not understand things like yogic science. We will wait and watch. We are confident that he will come back."
Source: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-40509494 :what:
Medical science does not understand things like yogic science.
Wait, what... Yogic? Yoga science!? What the hell. :v:
I wanted to say something about the stupidity here, but much like OP I was left with only one word, that being :what:
Hope they got a couple of chairs to sit while they wait.
none too surprising, and to call them a "cult" is a little overboard. india is crazy about guru culture and gurus can exercise a crazy amount of influence.
Why keep him in a freezer then? Surely he wouldn't decompose if this truly was just intense meditation.
Why keep him in a freezer then? Surely he wouldn't decompose if this truly was just intense meditation.
it doesn't matter if they're wrong or right, it's faith to them
Why keep him in a freezer then? Surely he wouldn't decompose if this truly was just intense meditation.
it's hot in india they just want him to be comfortable
Wait, what... Yogic? Yoga science!? What the hell. :v:
"This next pose is called the 'Dead Guru in a Freezer.'"
"This next pose is called the 'Dead Guru in a Freezer.'"
Yoga has a lot to do with indian religion and being a yogi is like being a preacher.
Wait, what... Yogic? Yoga science!? What the hell. :v:
Oh, you don't want to go down the rabbit hole of backwards ass shit people in this country believe, trust me on this. They believe cow piss has many magical medical properties and it's an ongoing joke right now for many legit products to advertise that they have "gaumutra" (i.e. cow urine in Hindi) to boost sales.
it doesn't matter if they're wrong or right, it's faith to them
Faith works better when you have an answer to the questions that arise from outsiders looking in on your beliefs.
Reminds me of Monty Python's Dead Parrot Sketch. "No no no, he's not dead, he's meditating!" Also I figure as long as they can pay the fees to keep him on ice and he's not contaminating food or anything it should be alright, completely bonkers but I can't see anything particularly wrong with it.
I'm sure they wont mind if they allow us to see if he has any heart and brain functions still left then. Even if he was in a state of suspended animation, the heart and brain should slow down their functioning to a huge extent but still work while the body is in that state.

hey if they want to keep the dude in a freezer that's their gig
Even if you did say "if he's not dead why freeze him" they'd probably just pull something out their arse "he needs to be a certain temperature to achieve a certain level of knowing!"
hey if they want to keep the dude in a freezer that's their gig
Yeah, everyone needs to just chill. As long as it's their money and their resources to keep their guru frozen, that's fine.
It's okay guys, just stick him in the microwave for a few minutes and he'll defrost.
Yeah, everyone needs to just chill. As long as the followers can claim he is still alive, they can control that money.
But Jha has alleged the guru's followers were keeping his body on ice so that they could maintain control of his estate. Over the years Maharaj had attracted millions of followers and his sect had amassed an estimated $120 million worth of assets.

This is so bizarre
On the contrary, I find this monetary reasoning way more understandable than actually believing a dead guy is just meditating
Is this the setup to a Temple of Doom sequel?
