The HTC Vive virtual reality headset now costs $599, a $200 reduction from the starting price of $799. “I think this is going to make it much more attractive to consumers, much more attractive to businesses, and we feel confident this is going to be something that drives an enormous uptick as we move into the holiday season,” Rikard Steiber, president of Viveport, told Polygon.
The big question is whether this was done in reaction to the recent price drop of the Oculus Rift. “I don’t think so. I think we are the leader in the market, and the plan was always that high-end VR be available to everyone,” Steiber said.
“So of course there are a couple of components that need to fall into place ... in order to reach the mass market, you need to have a lower price point. That’s been the plan all along. I think it’s good that other players in the market are making similar moves.” The HTC Vive package comes with the headset, two motion controllers and two wall-mounted sensors that deliver “room-scale” VR, allowing you to walk around and explore virtual worlds ... as long as you have room in your real-world surroundings.
getting closer to a price range i can afford
I'm gonna get one as soon as my current job settles down with my scheduling, what happened to the payment plans? I've searched around but I must be missing something.
This is great!
I did however buy the Rift after that enormous price cut, so what interests me is this bit here:

Did he mean the Vive is better tech-wise or just doing better on the market? The former doesn't make much sense to me.
This sounded awesome until I found Australia doesn't get the full $200 price cut but only $100 off. Ordering it here is still $1300 AUD apparently so they can keep sliding until I start considering it.
That's $1030 USD. I dunno why we get fucked so hard?
I just bought mine a few months ago, but I don't regret paying that price. I knew this was coming eventually but the payment plan was too good to pass up at the time. I wouldn't be surprised if it dipped another hundred for Black Friday either

That is just something every company says about itself.
Still something like €700 here.

But yeh, seems Australia gets fucked hard in everything, even things where one can't use the excuse of distance to ship for raising the price as much as they do e.g. digital content.
gamestop also has this trade-in offer too

if you can find a cheap psvr below 120$ (which is the trade in value at gamestop) you basically get a extra 100$ off it.

Canada gets fucked by incorrect tax amount if it makes you feel any better. Of course I find that out months after I bought mine.

Oculus on the other hand is around $450 usd
shits ridiculous, why is the vive so fucking expensive?

it was purpose built for room scale
it was purpose built for room scale
Oculus does room scale too, and pretty well from my experience.

It only left the experimental stage very recently, iirc. Since it became something everyone had access to, Rift is still the best choice right now, HTC just needed to drop the price to make vive a contender again. Now they just need to finish the knuckles and start including the Deluxe Audio Strap w/ retail packages and drop it another hundo

I have read tons of reviews about the Vive vs Oculus and i even made a post in /r/vive about if i should get the Vive or Rift and just about 100% of the people commented agreed i should go for the Oculus.
From what i could gather from the two, here are the advantages of the Vive:
- Easy of setup, it takes a few minutes to set up the Vive as you have to put your Lighthouse stations across your room and after this is done you basically have full coverage without any further interference with the station. You just need to set up some boundaries for the Chaperone system.
- Less cables, with the sensors of the Rift you require to pull a USB cable back to your PC and each sensor + the headset requires a USB 3.0 port which is on some PC's quite rare.
- Superior tracking, the lighthouse system is simply ingenious, you plug them into a power supply and kablam you are off, the tracking rarely lets you down unless something obvious is blocking your path.
- Privacy, the Oculus uses sensors that are in fact, webcams, and they can easily be turned to generate video image as if it was a webcam, that plus the fact that that (both headsets) have a microphone that could always be listening. Of course proper security measures should prevent any situation where your Oculus sensors could be used as a spy camera.
However, that said. The Oculus has a few things that people consider a advantage above the Vive:
- Comfort, many people agree on that the Oculus has a more comfortable headset.
- Games, they are not exclusive to the platform but if you get the Oculus Touch bundle you get 5 incredible games right away (Robo Recall is incredible!)
- Price, a no-brainer really.
- Touch controller, in a few cases the Vive Wand controller is better, but the fact that the Touch controller can register your finger movement is something that really adds to the immersion.
According to this datasheet you can get perfect tracking by having 4 sensors in your setup which also increases your playarea to that of the Vive (something HTC is very proud of since they claim only their headset can do this) but 3+ sensors is of this moment still experimental but very much possible.
All in all, the Vive isn't the king of tracking anymore after Oculus started to support more then 2 sensors in their setup.
The privacy concern is just paranoia, vive has a camera in front of it as well along with a microphone.
The privacy concern is just paranoia, vive has a camera in front of it as well along with a microphone.
I know but apparently enough people come up with it as a argument against the Oculus. I mean there is that and the people who don't want to use a product owned by Facebook.
I think I will wait for the Vive 2 or something, these price cuts by both occulus and HTC make me believe that the second generation is not far behind. Imagine all the gains and optimizations they could have made in the past few years. And since the tech is established and stable now, it might be cheaper as well.
The privacy concern is just paranoia, vive has a camera in front of it as well along with a microphone.
at least i can cover the vive cam up and it will still work

They had to manufacture a whole bunch of components themselves afaik, could be that theyve just improved the manufacturing process, thus the price drop.

And at least in VIVE's case, they're about to get *$500~ worth of peripherals that people will want (Deluxe Audio Strap, Knuckles, Wireless Module 2.0)
* Forgot that TPCast is more in the $300 range than the $100 range; still no official pricing released yet for the improved US version.
Oculus on the other hand is around $450 usd

Because HTC has to recoup on the hardware. Oculus primary business model is their software sold through the Oculus Store.
But in the end Steam still shifts the most VR sales making Valve the biggest winner :v:

The rift also lets you set up guardian boundaries no matter the size of your play area, whereas when I tried to do it with a vive a friend brought over it told me my room wasn't big enough and I'd have to do standing play without chaperones, which was annoying as I have plenty of space for VR.
If both devices had dropped price at the same time I'd have probably gone for vive but in hindsight I'm much happier with my rift purchase and glad I got it when I did.
my only concern is on the software side. i haven't been keeping up with VR news so I don't know much, but if I buy a Rift over a Vive will I be missing out on anything?
[editline]21st August 2017[/editline]
also glasses, i guess. which rig works best for those with glasses?

It's all third-party-solutions right now, but presently you should be able to play any VIVE exclusive game on a Rift and vice versa; each through a dedicated application.
Edit:
also glasses, i guess. which rig works best for those with glasses?
Norm from Tested stated that he liked the VIVE better for that - but your mileage may vary.
Vive works better with glasses. You can buy lens inserts for the rift if you have to use em there
Still waiting for a price cut of more than $100 here (Hope that's just some temporary thing). Maybe I'll just ship it from the US or something...
a vive costs 8500-10000 reais here
1 usd = 3.5 reais
thats 2570 dollars
:scream:
You could book a flight to the US, buy it and come back for cheaper.
Before I bailed on the Gamescom stream yesterday, I realized that I use my Vive far more than my Xbox. So at least I don't regret the early purchase :v:
I knew it was a good idea to wait.
