The high-tech unmanned yellow submarine, bearing a name that began as a joke, will begin its first mission this week through a deep current that starts in Antarctica and goes through the Southern Ocean.
Boaty will navigate through underwater waterfalls and rapids on a two-month mission, collecting data that will help scientists understand how global warming affects oceans. It will depart on Friday aboard the James Clark Ross, a British polar research ship, from Punta Arenas, Chile, and will head to the Southern Ocean.
The scientists involved can only hope that Boaty McBoatface will find something that draws as much attention to climate change as the odd story of how the vessel got its name.
The robot submarine’s missions can last for several months and include traveling thousands of miles under ice while reaching depths of about three and a half miles to measure seabed properties on an oceanic scale. It can then come back to the surface to transmit data to oceanographers via a radio link.
The British National Oceanography Center says it hopes Boaty will be able to make the first under-ice crossing of the Arctic Ocean.
Well, atleast one scientist has a sense of humor.
Boaty McSinkFace.

na this is just what happens when you ask the internet for suggestions
awful name (in my opinion)

Admirable that they pulled through, though.

Well at least somebody did. The original vote that it was supposed to win was for another vessel.
This one is more awesome anyways!

the poll was non-binding though and the ship ended up becoming the RRS Sir David Attenborough on which Boaty McBoatface is carried
awful name
I think it's a cute and endearing name

Memes are more important to the world than literally killing ourselves collectively.
From what I remember in the article, they decided that the name was no appropriate for the ship, but because it was the winner, they were going to name something else Boaty instead.

And that's something I can't even be mad about, Sir David Attenborough is a fucking world treasure and he's just as awesome in real life in person as he is in front of the camera.
The man deserves a shit ton of things named after him, so that kids won't ever forget about how awesome he was.
factually wrong
eh, each to their own. I just feel like there's a million better things to name it than a silly joke
eh, each to their own. I just feel like there's a million better things to name it than a silly joke
Sometimes it's better to name things something silly rather than being supersrs all the time with something like the name of a vessel, which in the end is the most insignificant thing about it
eh, each to their own. I just feel like there's a million better things to name it than a silly joke
this world needs more silly jokes in it.
giving it this name seems like a great way to draw attention to whatever cause it's working for. if Boaty McBoatface helps climate change research stay in the spotlight because news sites enjoy publishing articles about it's name, i'm all for that tbh
But it's not even a boat! It's a submersible unmanned vessel.
One step closer to irl Subnautica
Should have named the boat "Boaty Mc BoatFace" and named the sub "Titanic 2: Underwater Boogaloo".
U-Boaty McU-Boatface
Man, all that time under ice. Underwater pictures of frozen ocean is fucking scary to me. How little light penetrates the frozen waste above, the eerie blue hue the ice casts down..

Thankfully we won't have to worry about icy oceans much longer!

What would you have called it?
From what I remember in the article, they decided that the name was no appropriate for the ship, but because it was the winner, they were going to name something else Boaty instead.
you could never name a seafaring vessel that holds other seafaring vessels boaty mcboatface, because a boat doesn't hold other vessels, but a ship does
if they had gone for shippy mcshipface then we might be seeing something different

Submarines are referred to as boats, and subs sometimes carry SEAL Delivery Vehicles though

Take that, convention!
awful name (in my opinion)
No fun allowed.
N'Sink would be better.
"climatechangeisreal.org vessel"
Something about an un-manned vessel being given a silly person name makes it all the better
