Sony Interactive Entertained Japan announced that it would be shutting off online servers for Demon's Souls, the first title in From Software's Souls franchise. The shut off will be happening on February 28, 2018.
Without servers, Demon's Souls is still playable, but the game will lack online multiplayer in the form of cooperative play and PVP invasions, hint messages from other players, and bloodstains showing the deaths of other players. This marks the end of service since the game launched on PlayStation 3 in February 2009.
It was unclear if the same would happen to North American servers, as the game was published by Atlus on our shores. The official US Dark Souls Twitter account has weighed in, pointing to all servers going away on the same date.
It was actually already kind of dead. Recently for a lot of people having online connected would result in the game's performance degrading until the framerate was like less than 5fps
Such a shame too, Demon's Souls is probably my favorite game of all time
I remember being worried that DeS was shutting down multiplayer before I even got my hands on it back before it was even out outside of Japan. Luckily that didn't happen with the release in the west taking off.
Goodnight sweet prince
This is only for japan. EU and US are not shutting down... yet.

nvm :(
Farewell all the Japanese scraping spear stunlock headbutt builds with mad disrespect afterwards.
Time for a rerelease? So long as they don't fuck with the play style.

I thought the same at first, but both Atlus and the official Dark Souls Facebook page confirmed that it's shutting down for all regions.
Just beat this game for the first time around last week. It's completely dead. There's almost no player messages around, I didn't get invaded by anyone, there were a lot of bloodstains though, they were probably there for years however. I'm surprised that it's even still up, seeing as they were supposed to close in 2012-ish.

Afaik Sony owns the rights, so I guess it depends on if they want a DeS PS4 remaster or Bloodborne 2 instead.

Or both I dunno they're probably both very lucrative.
Played it a few months ago and beat it twice with two different characters.
I only saw 5 messages at best and one single summon sign...
It's sad to see it go obviously, but it's been dead for quite a while.
Heh, lasted longer than Gravity Rush 2.
But really though, it's too bad that it's shutting down, it really was a fantastic game.
ENB speculates about a remaster, i think a remaster would be great but if they did make one i wonder if they would rebalance it for new players or keep it as it is

I wouldn't object to a remaster if it means they get to work on The Northern Realms.
Might as well make Valley of Defilement less shit while your at it.
The time to play a souls is on release week
any later and the experience is ruined
