Trayvon Martin's getting a college degree. The slain Florida teenager -- killed by George Zimmerman five years ago -- will be awarded a posthumous bachelor's degree in aeronautical science from Florida Memorial University. Martin's parents, Sabrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, will accept the degree on his behalf during the school's spring commencement on May 13. Fulton is an alumnus of the school, a historically black university in Miami Gardens, Florida.
http://www.cnn.com/2017/05/04/us/trayvon-martin-college-degree-trnd/ Very short article.
It sucks that he died the way he did, I'm glad that he can be remembered better.
It is sad he died, but I don't see how anything he did makes this a normal thing to do. I understand posthumous degrees slightly, but this one is just kind of odd, especially considering the fact that it is 2017 now.
If it looks good for PR and it makes people feel good, why not?
remember it's not applying yourself to a better person, it's getting enough attention to be used as a talking point in a narrative representing something you weren't in the end. kid's it's okay to act violent in conflict over cold medicine and Arizona fruit punch.
especially considering the fact that it is 2017 now.
It's a five year degree. What, you think they'd cut him to the front of the line just for dying?
It's a five year degree. What, you think they'd cut him to the front of the line just for dying?
This gave me a good fuckin' chuckle, that's for sure. [editline]4th May 2017[/editline] Still, it's strange how it's been five years. It feels like it hasn't been that long since it all went down.
If it looks good for PR and it makes people feel good, why not?
Because in some ways it devalues the actual effort some people go through to get a degree?
This is silly, stupid, and cheapens the idea of a degree all the while totally ignoring the real context around the issue in question.
Good. He absolutely deserved it.
This is silly, stupid, and cheapens the idea of a degree all the while totally ignoring the real context around the issue in question.
are you serious dude he's fucking dead, not like he's about to go hop some engineers for an aerospace job. it's not a big deal.
I think lots of other things have already cheapened the idea of a degree at this point lol.
Because in some ways it devalues the actual effort some people go through to get a degree?
I mean, he's dead. I would be okay with giving every dead dude a degree, and I worked my ass off for mine.
What a joke. Really is. Regardless of all the politics and what happened (Both Zimmerman and Trayvon where shitty people). This is kinda dumb, for a school to award someone who wasn't working on this degree let alone didn't do shit to contribute to the school. Doesn't change anything and is just some PR nonsense for the school. Still stupid as hell.
are you serious dude he's fucking dead, not like he's about to go hop some engineers for an aerospace job. it's not a big deal.
Does something not being a big deal change what I said? No, not at all. I don't think it cheapens the idea of a degree a lot, I don't think it's going to matter in the big picture, but that doesn't mean it slightly cheapens the degree.
Does something not being a big deal change what I said? No, not at all.
Why not tell me it cheapens the idea of a degree when tuition prices actually fall
I think what he means is it devalues the degree symbolically. I think you guys are being too literal. I think it is disrespectful to the people who actually are in the field and contributed to it. Then to honor someone who wasn't in the field let alone studying it.
"hmm, how do I know that this applicant for this engineering job didn't get killed for their degree? Dang, used to be I never had to consider my job applicants might be secretly dead for five years to get their degree instead of earning it the ol fashioned way"
Yeah whatever if they want to give him an posthumous degree that's fine and all. But why in aeronautical science of all things?
Does something not being a big deal change what I said? No, not at all. Getting mad about it and spreading outrage will do more to cheapen it than the simple memory it was supposed to be.
Yeah whatever if they want to give him an posthumous degree that's fine and all. But why in aeronautical science of all things?
Because he made Zimmerman fly into a rage using only a pack of skittles.

Getting mad about it and spreading outrage will do more to cheapen it than the simple memory it was supposed to be.
If you don't think it's a big deal, then why aren't you critiquing the poster for posting the news article? Why aren't you critiquing the school for giving the degree if it isn't a big deal? Etc. The article was posted. So I responded to it. Saying that it isn't very important has absolutely zero to do with whether it's a good or bad idea. It can just be a little good or bad idea. [editline]4th May 2017[/editline] Are all little things good? Of course not.

No harm is done by this other than making the family feel recognised so I'm fine with it tbh
Good. He absolutely deserved it.
why
Good. He absolutely deserved it.
No he didn't. You deserve a degree when you actually work for . Dude is dead, doesn't seem like he'll be doing much studying
Good. He absolutely deserved it.
I agree. The young Nobel peace prize laureate and amateur aerospace engineer Mr. Martin was a true hero to the industry [editline]4th May 2017[/editline] i cant wait for Lockheed to hire him, it's only right
I mean, he's dead. I would be okay with giving every dead dude a degree, and I worked my ass off for mine.
Should be posthumously give him the Nobel Peace prize and Hugo award too?
Like, honrorary degrees have been a thing forever but why him? And why in that field? Generally they're given to people who have done work in a specific field for their work in that field at least to my knowledge.
Wow this is like affirmative action pure extract, getting a fairly prestigious degree because of your race when you were killed attacking a dude.
