• Spotify hit with $1.6 billion copyright lawsuit
(Reuters) - Music streaming company Spotify was sued by Wixen Music Publishing Inc last week for allegedly using thousands of songs, including those of Tom Petty, Neil Young and the Doors, without a license and compensation to the music publisher. Wixen, an exclusive licensee of songs such as “Free Fallin” by Tom Petty, “Light My Fire” by the Doors, (Girl We Got a) Good Thing by Weezer and works of singers such as Stevie Nicks, is seeking damages worth at least $1.6 billion along with injunctive relief. Spotify failed to get a direct or a compulsory license from Wixen that would allow it to reproduce and distribute the songs, Wixen said in the lawsuit, filed in a California federal court. Wixen also alleged that Spotify outsourced its work to a third party, licensing and royalty services provider the Harry Fox Agency, which was “ill-equipped to obtain all the necessary mechanical licenses”. Spotify declined to comment. In May, the Stockholm, Sweden-based company agreed to pay more than $43 million to settle a proposed class action alleging it failed to pay royalties for some of the songs it makes available to users. Spotify, which is planning a stock market listing this year, has grown around 20 percent in value to at least $19 billion in the past few months.
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-spotify-lawsuit/spotify-hit-with-1-6-billion-copyright-lawsuit-idUSKBN1ER1RX?il=0
$1 billion profit - $300 million lawsuit/settlement - $50 million in fines = $650 million profit. Totally worth it.
good, spotify is garbage
good, spotify is garbage
It's actually a really convenient way to listen to music. I haven't had to download a song in a good while, because it's all right there.
spotify is garbage
lol no. i listened to over 715 artists this year. why? because of spotify. ive been exposed to way more music than i ever would have without it. not to mention my student membership gives me access to hulu too. so its a great deal.

Spotify is a mixed bag for me - as an artist and consumer. On the one hand, I get to hear an atrocious amount of new music every month and listen to amazing podcasts for downright dirt-cheap. On the other hand, Spotify is pretty shitty when it comes to royalties and payments for its artists. A track would need to be listened to a couple hundred-thousand times in order to surmount to any practical money. This lawsuit is just a snippet of what's been happening for years. The worst part about the system is that the artists that I love to listen to aren't getting the capital they need in order to keep providing what I like to listen to. No amount of merchandising or touring is going to replace what really belongs to them.
Be more specific next time
Given that the article is very specifically about Spotify the company and not the app, Sirius really shouldn't have had to specify. It should have been pretty obvious.
I've learned of like 1000 new, good, not-famous bands just because of Spotify. Even gone on their gigs because of it. I'm gladly paying the 10€ a month for unlimited music that's available the nanosecond I want. I don't want them to go full-scumbag and die off. :frown:
A billion is probably not a whole lot for spotify though

A song being played on the radio for example is autmatically assumed to be played a couple hundred thousand times. When you calculate the "per play" payment of that Spotify actually pays out more. On top of that I've been going to concerts and a buying merch of bands I never would have heard without Spotify.
good, spotify is garbage
Nope
and no way of canceling payments unless you contact support which can take up to a week+ to reply to you
you literally click a button
Spotify (and soundcloud as well) has helped me discover past, present and upcoming artist. I absolutely love the service. But what I don't love is Spotify's track record in paying artist, it's pretty disgusting. I get they are a business and profit is king but indie artist deserve to be paid better for the content they create.
Nope
Wow, genius argument
I stopped using Spotify after learning how shit their account security is. My account got its password brute-forced and was hijacked. Why? Because there is no brute force protection, no two-factor security, no user-verification for account changes, no notification of unauthorized account access, and no way of canceling payments unless you contact support which can take up to a week+ to reply to you. Someone can literally just guess your password 400 times, change your account email without your intervention, and tada you have now lost your account. Literally some of the worst account security I have ever seen. And if they are using music without permission or compensation then honestly they can go get fucked. I do not regret moving to Google Music one bit.
why not sign up through facebook
good, spotify is garbage
still miles better than youtube

Agreed that 2-factor would have prevented it, but they shouldn't be able to get that far in the first place. Get a password manager, make retarded hard passwords, and be done with it.

Still don't have it here yet :/
snip i get it now
How much you wanna bet apple has a hand in this at some level? Ever since they introduced their rival service, spotify feels like its been on blast.
Be more specific next time
I am sorry that our discussion methods do not meet your previously unspecified criteria. In future all my mentions of Spotify® AB will be correctly named as such, and shall meet your criteria. I am so so, so so so sorry.
why not sign up through facebook
Because that would require a facebook account and that's a whole 'nother can of worms.
