Fashion famously comes in cycles and things once considered past it can make a surprise appearance on the runway. Is that what's just happened to the lungi?
Depending on where you're from, a lungi is either what you're wearing right now, what your dad and grandfather used to wear, or the thing you had to sport as a tourist to cover your legs when visiting a temple or pagoda.
But the lungi - or lungyi, longyi, sarong etc - has now found its way on to the High Street.
The lungi is a tube-shaped piece of cloth wrapped around the waist and tied together at the front.
It's been a veteran garment, mainly for men, in many parts of South and South East Asia, East Africa and the Arab world for generations.
The loose, light fits is perfect for warmer climates, while the length keeps the wearer modest and presentable. Often coming in a chequered design, lungis can be made of varying quality fabrics.
The price tag? Usually the equivalent of a few dollars at most.

If somebody told me that the lungi would make it to high fashion, I'd probably ask if you were off your meds
But I guess that's just how things roll when it comes to fashion
tbh not to be total fashion victim sounding but... you could make some pretty fire outfits with a lungi in the right colour / material
[editline]31st January 2018[/editline]
kinda like how Yohji Yamamoto makes those business hakama pants
but I mean Zara are always either directly ripping off designers or just making random trash so this isn't surprising
Never heard of these before, but they look comfy. If I were to buy one It'd probably be great as a replacement for pajama pants

I mean, I love my lungi - all the North Indian fuckers can shit on it all they want while pretending that their dhotis aren't lungis but whatever, they're missing out (as are all you western people too). Think of it as a really long kilt, dredge up some Scottish ancestry to rationalize wearing it if you just can't open your mind enough and enjoy it. Just be extra careful around flammable surfaces, in case this happens:

Tie-dye versions of what you posted (for women, there's a similar style called Patialas which are very comfy) is basically the "Foreigner/Backpacker in India" version of wearing "I Heart NYC" T-Shirts in New York.

We have untouchables for a reason, Sir Whoopsalot. I think you'd be a little more sensitive to their plight. :frown:

Almost all the people I've seen wearing these(both men and women), have dreadlocks and reek of weed.
My dad used to wear Lungis all the time so I had one as a kid. They're comfy as fuck!

As someone with a cabal of expat friends I definitely know all about these :v:
I have a couple of those (which I only wear in the house because I am not a goddamn hipster) and they're comfy as hell to wear in the summer
I read the thread title as "luigi" and I was very confused

Yday I was looking for a coat in Zara's website...
The shit I saw made me laugh way too much.

They're commonly referred to as "poop bag pants" around here, and (with the exception of the rare female fashion victim) are traditionally worn by Druze men.
Supposedly it's because they believe their prophet will be born of a man.
They obviously have a better name for them.

So it's a compartment to catch the prophet?

Druze religion is mostly secret, so this is more rumor than fact. It's more likely their pants are like that for modesty reasons- to mask the shape of the whole groin area.

If that's the case, then I'd say that they're pretty darn arrogant to think they need that much masking.
:smug:
Honestly I wish it wasn't an obnoxious faux pas to wear this kinda shit here because lungi actually look super fucking comfy yet warm at the same time. Goddamn.
since when is zara high fashion
since when is zara high fashion
The article refers to Zara as high street, not high fashion. They're two different things.
Edit: high street usually refers to a combination of mass-market to lower-priced contemporary brands. (Basically anything from H&M to Allsaints)
