Shortly after 11AM, the power went out in the central hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center, bringing CES to a near-standstill. The cavernous hall, measuring more than 632,000 square feet -- bigger than some aircraft hangars -- fell into silence, save for the backbeat of a few battery-powered speakers. A Tesla, parked with its doors open and headlights on, provided one of the few sources of light in an otherwise pitch-black hall.
Some companies used it to make jokes on twitter.

Also tough luck for those people:

The people at the electronics show were probably pretty shocked when the power went out, and I bet the show was effectively grounded by this sudden surge of darkness and silence. Would've been quite unnerving to say the least.
They wouldn't let us into the central hall, but CES was far from shut down. Central hall is only like 1/3 of the building and show

Ohm my god, I'm glad I've built up a resistance to bad puns like this after working with electronics for quite some time.
I'm positive they'll get power back up and running though so they can carry on with current events.

Actually some booths were still going in the dark.

Samsung even had its own backup power running.

Hot dang, that LG tweet is fire.
I remember being in a power cut in a remote village once, was so relaxing and peaceful.
Even though there weren't many "electrical" sounds in the first place, truly experiencing no power was magical.
I'd blame that Edison chap.

This is why I find things that are (while not needing to be) entirely electronic with no mechanical backup hilariously stupid. Our over-reliance on requiring electricity for basic things to function is going to fuck us over in the long run.
Those charging stations should either have magnetic locks that REQUIRE power to work (and be hardwired into the buildings mains so that people can't just unplug it to steal all of the phones), or have an internal battery for short term emergency power.
I couldn't get into my favourite bar once because the power went out for part of the building which prevented their (admittedly awesome) gimmick door from opening (a hidden bookcase entrance). A mechanical backup to open the door would have completely negated the problem.

Aside from that, if you're going to any sort of conference or convention, get a power bank. It's way more useful and you'll have your phone on your person.
Pretty cool how everyone can just whip out their smartphones for light and more or less carry on.

If you look closely some people were actually charging their powerbanks in that. :v:
Seriously though, that thing simply needs a UPS in there, make it stop charging and just keep the unlocking operational, shouldn't be that hard.

Post another pun that bad again and I'll knock your lights out.
What if it was some sort of challenge to find the best battery.
