This update might not work for everyone, i couldn't generate a world in the pre 1.8 update, and they apparently didn't fix that for the final version.
They got sponges working again in this update. No crafting recipe however. Banners are nice too.

yes they did unfortunately, but you can download a mod that brings that bug back if you want.
You can customize the world generation. You can make diamond super common and effectively suck all fun out of the game with the push of a slider!

On a serious note though I'ts pretty cool to tweak things around a bit. I wish they had done the same for mob spawns.

What is this "fun" you speak of? I'm not sure I remember what that's supposed to feel like in this game.
Time to play the game vanilla for like five minutes until I realize it's not as fun without mods and go back to 1.7.2

Well you can get sponges now, they're loot for a new type of dungeon.
