• Why does steam not have a rental system?

It think it would be a great idea for Valve to get some more money coming in, not to mention the other developers. You rent the game for a selected amount of time, like 3, 5, or 7 days, and at the end of the period you can either buy the game, or just get on with your life.
Good idea, some games are lacking demos and it sucks to buy a new game and find it is total shit.
I'm not sure how popular it would be, but it sure is a GREAT idea! I'm not sure why Valve hasn't implemented it yet.
That's actually a really good idea. I'd rent everything for a week ( cheaper ) and then not buy it since I finished it.
Would be good to be able to rent a game that wouldn't take you that long to finish, especially if you're not likely to play it again.
It might be what NorthenGate is saying here. People rent a single-player game, finish it within a week and save theirselfs 45 dollar. Great for us, not so much for the developers.
I think we should have a playtime rental system, like, choose 8 hours of PLAY time, so that people with shit download speeds won't expire without playing for the full week or whatever they rented it for.

Wouldn't the cost of running their servers sending us gigabytes of data make them loose money? (you would be paying less for the same amount of data) Or they would need to expand their servers memory for all the extra demo files if they do it that way. Sounds like a good idea but maybe not cost effective in the long run.

Would indeed be a good idea. Since a lot of pirates actually download games to test them, this would be a good way to decrease their number too.
Make multiplayer games only rentable. Otherwise short singleplayer games are fucked.
If this feature was added they should make it so at the end of the rental phase you could purchase the full game minus the rental charge (so if the game cost £20, and you rented it at £3 for a week, you could then buy the game for £17).
I agree. Don't use Steam much, but I can see the use of rentals. Especially when there's a game you just want to play out of sheer curiosity or you know the game is mostly a short single player campaign, so you don't want to invest a lot of money into it.
I don't think Valve liked the idea of rental. In fact, no game developers like renting a game. Game publisher prefers you to BUY their games instead of renting it. Face it, STEAM will never resort to rental
Well the customer goes "Hmm i might rent this game to give it a go..." They play it for a week and think "I've already downloaded it and i enjoyed it so i may as well pay for it and keep it." Valve makes money.
It is a great idea, it's cost free for Valve and a win-win situation for everyone. I really don't know why they haven't implemented it yet.
I don't really think it would be the best idea because people would just finish the game. They want you to buy it.
Great idea, I hope Valve implements it into the system.
its a win-win for us but some ass-holes will bitch, but not a bad idea
I think it's a good idea but it will end up being exploited with extractions and shit
