Most Sansa MP3 players are relatively cheap and nice. I have a Zune which is around the same price of an iPod.
Have a look in the argos catalogue. I got a 4gb panasonic from there for 30 pounds. USB charging aswell.

The newer Walkmans are generally cheap. Got mine for $75 and it included USB charging. I think the one I have is 4Gb.

I've gotten a Samsung GoGear Vibe 4GB. Got it for $30. Screen is kinda small though. It's good overall though.

I got my 4gb fuse for $35, and added an $15 4gb microsd card to it.
GoGear's are usually cheap. You get them from Wal-Mart, but hey its still a bargain if you dont care about fads and having a iPod to go along with the crowd.

Anything NOT an ipod. Sandisk makes AMAZING mp3 players.
I would reccomend a sandisk clip. 40-50 dollars, fm/am radio, 4 gigs, 20 hour battery life, ACTUALLY HAS SCREEN AND BUTTONS unlike shuffles.
