I know how much some people love the Mario and Zelda franchises, but it wouldn't hurt Nintendo if they stopped making the same game. They've been doing it for literally 30 years and NO SHIT it's not helping.
I don't have a problem with Nintendo making Mario games.
The problem I have is how frequent they do them.
They remade the original Super Mario Bros 3 times in 5 YEARS.
Make Pikmin/Star Fox/Metroid/whatever instead of making so many Mario games
Sure they've been making games in the same franchise for a long ass time, but unlike some developers they don't make a new one every single year.

Yes it WOULD hurt. The costs are immense of making a new IP.
Also, the problem in this matter are not the games, the problem are the hardware sales.

except you know Nintendo has a boatload of franchises and each one of the games is not just the same game
prolly wouldnt hurt nintendo to expand thier game catalog beyond family friendly titles like mario and zelda. why not put something out for a more mature audience too? offer more diversity and such.

Devils Third and Bayonetta 2
Sure those are second party games, but they wouldn't exist at this point without Nintendo.
The Wii U has a few more "mature" games that are thrid party, and the Wii had a good amount of M rated games as well that were exclusive to the system.
Damn, and here I thought Nintendo had done pretty well for itself this year

never heard of the devils third but i didnt know bayonetta came out on wiiu. still tho, imagine how awesome something like a first party eternal darkness for wiiu would be. i dont doubt nintendo can make some awesome games. i think they shouldnt be afraid to branch out themselves a bit too tho.

They don't really branch out that much since when they do the games sell poorly which results in them going back to what sells.
Devils Third is the new game by the guy who made the Ninja Gaiden series, and Bayonetta 2 is a Wii U exclusive since no one wanted to fund the game except for Nintendo iirc. And now Bayonetta 2 is coming with a "remasted" (or something like that) version of the first game for free , and now there are talks/rumors of a possible third Bayonetta game being a Wii U exclusive.
The E3 honey moon period was great, but even after then great E3 Nintendo had this year and the good announcements, ther core problem the Wii U had are still present. It's still a console that's only worth for Nintendo games (which now take more time to develop and thus are less common), it's online is still outdated and archaic, and it's still a console largely ignored by most developers.
Honestly the 350 they ask for the console at the moment is not worth considering the Wii U almost needs another system, and while a lot of the more hardcore gamers will say that PC/PS4 + Wii U is best combo at the end of the day, the vast majority of console users don't buy more than a system and as it stands the Wii U can't stand on it's own for most people, especially if you don't like Nintendo games.
Sure, Smash Bros. and Zelda will move some units, but not much after the first couple of weeks. Like Mario Kart it will sell more to existing Wii U users than new (http://infogr.am/Wii-U-sales-since-launch?src=web).
There's also the fact that there's been a lot of push back from them releasing new entries of games that don't need sequels.
People in here have said that they don't release the same game, but they essentially do.
The art Style is the same, the gameplay(with a few tweaks) is still the same, the stories are usually the same and goals are the same.
The only difference is each has a new coat of paint.
You can definitly keep the very hardcore audience, you got them as kids and the hardcore gamers LOVE their rose tinted glasses. You won't be grabbing the new audience anymore. The franchises, while still selling, have lose their traction on Nintendo's biggest demographic, children.

Problem is that they don't have titles like Call of Duty,Halo, GTA etc. You might not like it but the fact is that these games are great for selling your console to the... younger demographics.
They had CoD, until now that is.

Its not just Call of Duty and Halo. Children will play what their older siblings or parents are playing, they want to copy you.
They had CoD, until now that is.
But the same version of CoD is on the 360/PS3/PC, which the ones who are interested already probably have. Failing that, their friends probably aren't on Wii U.

The Wii U versions were ports of the X360 versions but with slightly better visuals (iirc they only improved the lighting and graphics didn't downgrade much when in splitscreen), but yeah the main differences were lack of DLC and the communities are small. BO2 seems to peak around 4k and Ghosts would peak around 8K.
But the Gamepad was a nice touch to both games since you don't need enter the menus to swap loadouts and offscreen play. And Ghosts came out on the Wii U the same time as it did on other systems, but BO2 came out a few days later since the Wii U wasn't out at the time the game launched.
people keep saying the nintendo makes the same games over and over but uh... no?
if you honestly think that super mario 64, sunshine, and galaxy are the same game, get your eyes checked.
Of course basic gameplay stays the same, it's the same goddamn franchise, it's the content that matters
If they commissioned Retro for another Metroid (Prime) game, or Star Fox sequel as they hinted at they'd get more dosh

iirc Miyamoto and his team are working on Star Fox, they teased a really early conecpt at E3, and Retro is working on some secret project.

those r three games released over ten years tho. in that time theres also been new super mario bros, new super mario bros wii, new super marios bros 2, new super mario bros wiiu. plus theres super mario 3d land (mario 64 on handhelds basically), its sequel, and the sequel to mario galaxy. to me that looks like pretty much the same thing just released over and over again with slightly different tweaks between them. granted sunshine and galaxy were pretty different and mixed up the formula a bit.
Of all of those the only ones that really "the same" and the New Super Mario Brothers games. They rest are pretty different.

New Super Mario Bros, New Super Mario Bros 2, New super Mario Bros Wii and New Super Mario Bros U are pretty much the same game though with small differences.

Dude, the gameplay is what makes the game.
NSMB is Nintendo's version of CoD.

And that is something Nintendo is really good with.
whoa

since super mario 64 thers been 8 mario party games, plus another on the way, plus the coupel of handheld mario party games. plus 6 mario kart games on consoles since 1996 too.

Yeah the N64 had a a good amount of Mario Party games but they've been slowing down on releasing them. And Mario 64 came out in 1996, 8 games in 18 years isn't all that awful. And there's been at least one MK game per console.
They really don't shit out games at the pace people seem to think.
im not saying mario is bad or that nintendo should stop with mario, but that theres a lot of mario and a lot of it is very similar. nintendo should try out more new ips. spittoon looks good. for example. it just seems like they rely on established ips way more than new ones and people r starting to get tired of the same thing.
