I've actually heard stories that these songs were removed from some copies of the Japanese version of the game because it made kids over there commit suicide. Pretty crazy stuff.

Oh man Lavender Town scared the shit out of me as a kid. There's something unique about the original songs from the Gameboy Color games that the new gen games couldn't capture.

I think the reason those are depressing is due to that echo. Good god, it feels like the entire world of pokemon is a thin veil over something much, much, darker, trying to pass off light-hearted. But it's really empty inside. Behind all the facade of happy faces and cheerful enviornment is just a sinister void of just... nothing. Really freaks me out. It's also slightly out of tune, which just shows that they aren't trying their hardest to hide it.
