GWFL can fucking burn in a fire and suffer a painful death and I hope microsoft never tries something so shitty again.
Never had as many issues with a single piece of software as I've had with fucking GFWL. Seriously don't understand why developers/publishers still fucking use it.
I never once had a problem with gfwl. It always worked as it should, all be it clunky and slow as fuck.
Couldn't play Bioshock 2 for a week after launch thanks to GFWL
Also lost a Fallout 3 savegame because of it.
I appreciate that using GFWL to handle the online component for PC ports is much easier than using another service, but it's like using glue to build a brick house instead of mortar because there's a can of it at your feet.
So far its cost me a ridiculous amount of time and progress in both Arkham games due to save corruption and an inability to create backups, and spoiled too many sessions of Iron Brigade with my friends.

My guess is that some are forced by Microsoft.
MS: "Hey, you want your DLC-toting game to be licensed for the 360? You better put GFWL on your PC version!"
Of course some also do it for unified achievements and such.

Holy shit yes. I almost gave up on playing Arkham City because of GFWL deleting fucking FIVE of my savefiles before I found out how to make backups.
I had to make a GFWL account for Gotham Gangsters etc, it took me like 12 attempts to actually fucking sign up.
Alec Meer is 100% correct though, PC gaming has become very easy. Auto updates, digital downloads and access to your library from any pc you'd like.
Some quiet good news at least: Capcom seem to be moving to Steamworks in their recent titles. DmC: Devil May Cry used it instead of GFWL for its leaderboard feature and both the upcoming Resident Evil ports will too.

There's a way to make backups? I tried and failed to move the save files, profile details and encryption key over to a new computer and didn't have any luck there.

GFW was a good idea, it was a set of standards MS made so it could brand games that met them. Like full 360 controller support, LAN play, Widescreen support, 10 languages, full keybinding, stuff like that. but GFW----L is a disaster.
I loathe having to set it up to play GTA with friends.

I just don't play GTA IV anymore because at least then I don't have to deal with GFWL. GTA IV isn't even that amazing to begin with.

GTA4 is a great game, but more importantly, it's a great sandbox for playing with friends on skype which I tend to do every few weeks or so.
I hope whoever came up with GFWL gets his nutsack caught in a moving car!
Never in my life have I had the displeasure to be the victim of such a broken fucking mess of a so-called "service". Over the course of 10 minutes, it pisses me off to no end mostly due to the updating procedures so unbelievably stubborn it makes me want to destroy everything around me.
GFWL is the ultimate in invasive, annoying shit that brings you to the verge of combustion once you get to play the damn game you paid money for.
GTAIV is an absolute cunt to get working, partly due to GFWL. You expect that kind of frustration and tinkering from mid-90s games, not something current-gen. In fact no, doom was released in 1994 and is easier to get working. HL2 was released in 2004 and works perfectly because valve actually care.

There is, I don't remember how anymore but I know you can (or at least could) make backups of savefiles.
I just hope that, someday, Bioshocks 1 and 2 and all their DLC will be completely severed from GFWL, with the DLC purchasable on Steam.

It's an alright multiplayer game if you all have trainers, but as a single player game it's nowhere near as good as San Andreas was.

Which is why I didn't mention singleplayer at all in my posts, the mechanics of the game are great, adding in many people makes it a playground for friends obviously.
I mean, I... liked GTA4's single player, but your right it's pretty weak. I liked Vice's the most probably.
I disagree with the mechanics. I feel like the game made too many sacrifices for the sake of realism that compromised fun. I got to about late act 2- early act 3 in the campaign before I lost my save games due to GFWL and I simply don't want to have to wrestle with the wonky pedestrian controls and the even wonkier driving mechanics again to find out how the game ends. The game for me is just unplayable unless I have a trainer and I'm taking the physics to the absolute extreme for comedic effect.
Cracked.com's Robert Brockway sums it up perfectly for me.
4 Reasons Why the Best Multiplayer Games Are All Broken
I have some conflicting opinions about GTA IV: I think everybody should own it, because what Rockstar accomplished with the living, breathing city they built is a feat that transcends gaming and ventures into science fiction territory. It's just too bad they layered an irreparably broken game on top of it. The controls were awful, the missions were lifeless and repetitive, and they generally seemed to lack any kind of creativity or imagination with which to fill their staggering technical achievement.
And yet, despite itself, GTA IV possessed what might have been the most fun multiplayer mode of any current generation game. So what was so ingenious about this new and novel mode?
Nothing.
They didn't do a damn thing. They gave the player a Grand Theft Auto city and allowed multiple players in the same space. The end. No objectives, no scores, no penalties -- just you and a dozen of your friends, all with infinite lives, set loose in the most dynamic landscape built in video game history.
GFWL fucked up my GTA4 save. I had to start from the beggining, and lost interest in it.
Weirdly, somehow, it runs worse now.
