Reminds of the 360 DICE did with BF3's colour correction. "We're proud of BF3's visual identity" blah blah blah - but neither in this case nor in that case is it okay to impose your will on the players over something you could easily implement.
I usually don't get my panties in a twist over DRM, but when I'm having fucking input lag in single player is where I draw the line.
i hate when devs SHOVE features down the troat thinking its TOTALLY what the " community " wants
oh man this permanent internet online and the safe trading environment! its TOTALLY what they want!
Fuck you too Blizzard
idk what the big fuss is about. I've never had problems with always online in Diablo 3.
That butcher pic.

You should've been around a couple nights ago where their authenticator server died for about 8 hours. First chance I had time to play all week and I couldn't even play it.
lol, kinda strange how blizzard has a game that has a superior console version
I don't even like Diablo that much
idk what the big fuss is about. I've never had problems with always online in Diablo 3.
Not being able to install from a disc and play without a launcher updating or checking for updates, logging in, and then constantly being connected to a server to play by yourself is the problem. That problem is only compounded when your internet is out, their internet is out, too much traffic on your line causing lag, too much traffic on theirs causing lag, authentication servers being down, and so on and so forth and so on
Unless it's an MMO, connecting to a server and playing online should be a SEPARATE, and/or OPTIONAL part of the game. Not THE game, and I don't care what game it is
Well Blizzard you just killed off like half of your potential expansion buyers.

The game is pretty much unplayable for me due to net lag.
This is the only reason i didn't buy Diablo III despite me being a huge fan of the franchise.
I just couldn't stand the internet lag on a mf'in single player game.
The console version got my hopes up for a pc patch :(

Don't worry you aren't missing anything if Diablo is what you're into. Path of Exile is so much closer to Diablo 2 than Diablo 3 ever thought about being, and PoE's free.
I guess people will just buy alternatives to this game instead

Very true. Diablo 3 has good gameplay (in my opinion) but the storyline and characters are retarded. I can't believe Blizzard actually paid people to write dialogue that bad.
Every villain in Diablo 3 tells you their every plan, intention, and next move every chance they get including hell's greatest general. I know Diablo was never meant to be a story driven game, but they couldn't have done a worse job with it.
Path of Exile is awesome, I highly recommend it.
I'm pretty sure the online is there to stop people from fucking with the auction house, something that as far as I know isn't in the PS3 version
We know this, it's still not an excuse for no offline mode. They could make it so offline characters can never come online nor can they ever use the auction house. For those who only play singleplayer like me, there would be no problem but they prefer to make excuses rather than implement it.
I also know the drops are all server-side, but if they can do offline mode for a console there's nothing stopping them from doing it for PC too.
I'm pretty sure the online is there to stop people from fucking with the auction house, something that as far as I know isn't in the PS3 version
But I just wanted to play offline, nothing else, I don't need my offline character to go online at all.

On my list of games to try, then. Thanks for the advice.
It's strange how they are so adamant about walking back the auction house but not the online requirement. At this point I'm thinking that it simply would have been too much work. The online structure of the PC version is too integral to the game that it would require a massive revision to remove it. So they come out with these transparent excuses about how playing online is the superior way to deflect the issue. Yeah, I'm sure playing cooperatively is the "best" way to play Diablo but surely there can be an option for people who want to play your game without logging in to a server?

PoE is a better analogue than Torchlight 2 but still neither game captures the same magic Diablo 2 had and I didn't play them nearly as long as Diablo 3.

If you read the interview, the online aspect of the game is marketed like an MMO-esque network to the game
But on PC, we really want players to feel they’re part of the bigger Blizzard and Diablo community
The PC version was built like this intentionally. It's not some bullshit anti-piracy DRM, it was an attempt on Blizzards part to create a pseudo-MMO. One that you can log in to by yourself or with a friend and complete content but also one that has a community aspect to it. The arbitrary barrier wherein only MMO's are allowed to be only online becomes even less clear when you take into consideration MMO's that play like action RPG's (TERA, Neverwinter; games that have action based combat and support relatively few people per world instance) and action RPG's that play like MMOs (Marvel Heroes, PoE) not to mention the wealth of free to play games that could have easily playable decentralized environments but don't.

This happened with the original Diablo on PS1. It had an improved lighting engine that had colored lighting unlike the PC verison. Not much of an improvement, but it does make the the console version 'superior' in a small way.

They can market it however they want, it doesn't change the fact of what it is. You don't need to be connected and online in a game where you have just 4 people together max (And only then with invitations so what's the point of forced always online). The reason for it all comes down to the Auction House and Blizzard's sly way of getting more money from people. Diablo 3 was built around the Auction House, not the other way around. How do you keep the integrity of that? Always be online.
To say it's to make people think they're a part of a bigger community is stupid. Does the X series not have a community? What about The Elder Scrolls or Fallout? It would be different if you walked into town and you saw 100 other people there with you, could trade with them right then and there RATHER than invite them to your personal instance that everyone has. It's a forced part of the game for no reason other than to keep the integrity of the Auction House
And while PoE doesn't capture Diablo 2 fully, its art style and gameplay are closer to Diablo 2 than 3, so much so that if they called PoE Diablo you'd be like Yeah, I like this
