Is this a good thing, a bad thing, or a horribly awful thing?
Also, I'm moving from Northern Florida, which is not an especially "Southern" part of the South, if that makes a difference (ie It's pretty liberal).

Well if you enjoy it there/have friends there you might find it a pain to move the Manhattan because you have to do it all over again. (ie. Make new friends and all that jazz.)

There are worse places. Like Queens or the Bronx
The Bronx is a nice place. Very friendly people. You should move there.
