all I know is I'll never get an actual consumer version of one of these vr things until I'm an old man

So I'm not knowledgable when it comes to all these VR headsets that are coming out, but having tried the Oculus Rift at Comicon I was 100% convinced on purchasing one. Is the oculus still considered the best option, or does this HTC Vive thing give it a run for its money? I mean there's no real way to tell until people can get their hands on these things, but like, looking at the specs and features and stuff, is there any indication on which horse to bet on?

HTC Vive claims to have two 1200x1080 screens on it (as opposed to one 1080p screen on the Rift) for an effective resolution of 2400x1080, 90fps max refresh rate, and a different method/philosophy for motion tracking that allows full movement within a 15x15 foot area. Also if Valve is doing any of the stuff required to achieve "presence" as they call it based on their list of criteria for the tech, it might feel more realistic than the Rift according to very early reports from last year, but that's just me pulling assumptions out of my ass.

Nobody knows the Rift's final specs yet, but people are hoping for some new info during GDC that starts tomorrow on the 3rd (especially with the pressure that Vive has put on the Rift, they just have to say something).
This is actually the first Valve hardware related thing I'm actually interested in, but that depends on how competitive the price is.
They also talked briefly about an HTC made game controller, could HTC be the manufacturer for the steam controller?
Isn't that the VR controller? If so should be completely separate from the normal controller.
It's a totally separate deal than the Steam Controller. Think of it like the Razer Hydra, but a bit more, advanced. It's to be used so it can track your hands so you can interact with the virtual reality space e.g. pick up objects, use a pistol, punch someone in the face.
