Never played JRPGs but am interested in what they're like. Is this a good place to start?

I'd recommend Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky if you want a really good JRPG, it's also on Steam.

No.
The PC port is a bad port of a bad port of a bad port. Literally.
It's a worse port than Dark Souls' initial PC release. Newly introduced Engrish that wasn't in the English script of previous releases, broken text in FIGS languages, fucked button-icons, locked to 720P/30FPS, crashes, the list of issues goes on. It's a PC port that feels like it came out squarely in the mid-2000's when the "We're abandoning PC because [B][I][U]PIRACY[/U][/I][/B]!" bullshit was going on
Tales of Zestiria is a better choice if you want to try out a JRPG and it has to be this IP since it has a port that isn't complete ass. Or wait for Berseria which is much better and will probably be a better port than Zestiria.
