Recently I got a Pinnacle capture device from a friend (for free). It works and all but the screen you see the preview on is small as hell (like 500x500) and is nearly impossible to play game son (if capturing from my 360 or whatever). Now I read on some other forum I found through a Google search that the included software doesn't necessarily have to be used and that other software can be used. Unfortunately I couldn't really find any good tutorials on how to set that all up. So some help getting this to work with some other software would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. The capture device http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815144040&cm_re=pinnacle-_-15-144-040-_-Product
If you can, you might want to invest in Y-cable splitter. They are pretty cheap. Then you can plug it into a TV while your recording, with no input lag and at a larger size.
I actually use a monitor for the screen as it is...and I managed to find some software that picks it up but the sound only works on video playback and is fuzzy...needs some fine tuning me thinks
what codec does it record to ? if it allows you to choose maybe you should consider xvid
At my work we do a lot of live video capture/encoding
Best solution is probably going to be Flash Media Live Encoder, it's pretty legit (used on client jobs all the time), free and lets you capture in high enough bitrates that lossy encoding really shouldn't matter for your purposes

It's made to be able to push a live video stream out to the net, but you can also do a video capture with it. Although, that said, if you do output to f4v (h.264 in an flv style wrapper) it will require file proccessing afterwards to be able to play right, as for some odd reason it doesn't properly add tracking data or something to that effect. To fix that you will need a program called f4vpp.exe
Other options we've used include Wirecast, Digital Rapids Stream and Windows Media Live Encoder
