Okay I have no excuse not to get Windows 8.1 now.
Should've gotten it way earlier. It runs smoother and works better overall.
The Stanley Parable, Ubuntu 13.10 and Windows 8.1? Could this day get any better?
Okay I have no excuse not to get Windows 8.1 now.
It's kind of misleading - the old start menu is not in the release, all you're getting is the button (which was just "invisible" before). It'll still lead to the new Start Screen.
I don't even get why people were so pissed off about the new start screen, its fantastic
desktop mode will help a lot tho
Oh. Well shit.
I guess I still need Windows 8, but with Start8 or something.
StartIsBack master race
I thought SIB would be a poor, slow imitation of the proper start menu but it's perfect
the unified search is awesome, aswell as the new shortcut (i think it's new) win+s which just opens a small sidebar for the search
I'm still on win7.
If I download the 8.1 RTM can I upgrade it to the official 8.1 that released today or is that not possible?
I'm a little confused, is 8.1 just released as a regular update or will I have to download it manually?

StarDock's Start8 is nice too. Same functionality as the Windows 7 start menu with shortcut to Metro apps and looks a bit more Windows 8'ey.

Fuck knows why Microsoft haven't bought Stardock yet.

But the article says you can change that too.
Where did they get that information?

It's also my birthday. Everything feels so fucking special.
So does the update happen automatically for current 8 users?
So does the update happen automatically for current 8 users?
You have to get it in the Metro Store thing. It's not showing up for me yet.
Okay I have no excuse not to get Windows 8.1 now.
You had no reason not to get it in the first place.
It's nice that they've re-added the start button and allow you to boot straight to the desktop but they're both kinda useless. You can get to the desktop like 1 second after booting to the start screen regardless.

It's in the Windows Store

Where's my 8.1 update? Not Where's My Water (2)?
If the Windows 8.1 update tile doesn't show up on the store, go to the Windows Update app and check for updates then close and re-open the store.
You just need to poke it to update since it doesn't do so very often.
-snip, late-
It popped right up for me

This didn't work for me, getting annoyed now.
Upgrading now, can't wait to try it out

Oddly this worked for me despite having accidentally done exactly this a little while ago...

When it worked for me I completely closed out of the store, went and checked for updates, then when that was finished I went back to the store and manually went back to the homepage and it was there.
if you are running windows 8 and cant find it in the store, you can click this link to take you to the download in the windows store.

Its really good. Everything feels right.
If this is faster than 8 with my SSD ill be cheering. It takes only 5 seconds from post to desktop at the moment.
If you want your actual start button back just download classic shell.
You don't really need it because the Start menu is great.
