My laptop's about 3 years old. I have Windows 7 and Ubuntu (both x64) running in a dual boot.
My problem has started recently. Windows will randomly shut off during operation. No BSOD, no shutdown signal, just power off. I thought it was heat, but my temps are fine. I thought it was RAM, but I tried using just one stick and it still happens. It seems to crash much more often when I'm doing intensive tasks, like gaming and encoding video.
However, Ubuntu performs all of these tasks without crashing at all.
Why is this happening? Help me, Facepunch!
Try reformatting, if it's at all doable, and reinstall it. There might just be something wrong with the Windows install.

Did, twice. With different disks.
Then don't use windows.

Now on topic, did you try with a vanilla Windows install? Maybe it's one of your programs that's causing this.
I've had this issue for years. no rhyme or reason, windows just occasionally shuts down, while Linux stays up no problem for months at a time

If it doesn't work, and you have an equivalent that does work, why attempt to use the one that doesn't work?
If it doesn't work, and you have an equivalent that does work, why attempt to use the one that doesn't work?
Because Ubuntu is not an equivalent to Windows 7?
Because Ubuntu is not an equivalent to Windows 7?
Equivalent in terms of what it can do.
hardware incompatability errors?
are your drivers up-to-date?

Nope, sorry.

No driver issues. This is really starting to piss me off.

Wine is shitty and doesnt work very well for everyone

It does however run office fine and there are no problems with multiple monitors I know of.
Yeah, I have no problems running three monitors in Linux at all. And Wine usually fails for me only if there's too much going on at once.

wine doesn't really work for gaming. It's a rough barely passable approximation of the windows experience.

Yeah, and there's not many visual enhancements, and much less framerate too. Sorry for if my english is bad.
Start up your computer in safe mode if necessary, then do this
Start-> Run -> "msconfig" -> startup tab
disable everything but what you need to run your computer (ie leave in all the shit from ati/nvidia, your sound card manufacturer etc). Every time this has happened to me on windows it's never been windows itself, just some program being a dick. Good luck with the problem
Is there anyway by chance that it is your power settings. Check to see if they are on max performance.

I second this motion
Also, take out any/all mem-sticks and whatnot then use windows, could be some program in there

You can't run windows without RAM.

I think he meant USB drive/SD card... Not RAM sticks.
