I guess it is useful for making sure you are going to tap the right thing but... meh
Can't really see any practical use for it, but I guess you won't get your screen full of fingerprints, or as much.
Disappointed, I thought by 'touchless' it meant a phone with normal buttons.
What happens if you do touch it? It still works right?
Also, hovering a finger close to a screen is harder than touching, so what the hell.

Er.. was thinking for voice activated.. or thought. Buttons would involve.. touching. :/
Well that's extremely unnecessary. I kinda like being able to have physical contact with the screen/buttons of my phone.
Gimmick.
It will be let down by Sony's terrible implementation of android on their xperia phones.
Touchscreens don't have enough tactile feedback as it is. Why make a hoverphone?

You still have to touch the screen, it's just you can hover your finger over the screen to 'mouseover' things like you can do with a mouse on a computer
The range on it seems impractical.

I don't think there's anything really important I do with the mouseovers besides showing the desktop and tooltips. But if it's just for "mouse-over" than it's even more gimmicky and stupid.
I bet it's just to mess with Apple's touchscreen patents.
Disappointed. I'll only be satisfied when they create devices that can be controlled just by thinking about what you want it to do.
If it's touchless, You couldn't hold it. :v:
I can't see this being very useful on a phone, but I can see this being useful on touchscreen kiosks. Case in point: the screen on my local train station's ticket machine is at such an angle that I almost always miss the buttons despite touching them (what I perceive to be) right in the centre. Having a cursor would make it much easier to see exactly where I'm going to press.
If it works well I can see it being useful. I miss the :hover actions when browsing stuff on my phone. If I could physically hover my finger over something and get the same result as hovering my cursor over it - I'd be happy :)

I agree, for us web developers its heartbreaking to see our fancy hover effects go to waste on mobiles.
Was hoping for honest-to-goodness buttons, was dissappointed.
This isn't even practical.

If you watch the video, it makes more sense as being able to use your finger as a mouse cursor. Tap it to "click" your selection.
I personally think the hover-over capability of this phone looks like a great feature, s'long as it works the way it does in the video. I do wonder how easy it is to trick the sensor, though.
instead of trying to make some new feature for your phone, why not focus on making it faster and more responsive? How about a 2.7GHz processor for once?
Well, other than hovering above the screen and moving the mouse around, I don't see any good use for this.
Can't touch this, ooh ooh oh oh oh ooh oh oh
So we've gone from writing a text message being easy, to being somewhat easy, and now impossible.
I was hoping for voice recognition so we could all laugh at how it won't detect most accents.
In the near future: "Sony unveils new nonexistent phone"

Why can't a phone company just make a hiptop with a touch screen. Best of both worlds with the screen for web browsing and a keyboard for typing.
At very least, a pop out mobile keypad so I can type out messages without looking at the screen every time I go to press a letter.

I was going to say the same thing, the hovering ability is a wonderful feat and I hope to see all touch devices using this technology as standard.
