Actual editing such as transitions, speeds, modification of the video itself: Sony Vegas.
Titles, intros, outros, credits, special effects: Adobe After Effects.
ms paint
Just don't get Final Cut Pro, it's super annoying
Like Lightworks or something? It's free and it was used on King's Speech.

Well that's because the format was made by Windows and Apple is a stuck-up bitch of a company
Avid

Only $695-895
Very nice stuff, just expensive and everything is complicated when you first start but once you get the hang of it, it's awesome.
Also there is AVS. http://www.avs4you.com/
You pay like $15 (if I remember correctly.) and you just about get all their software. It's easy to use too. I think it has a trial version too.

You can always teach yourself by reading the manual or searching online. Youtube has tutorials for everything nowadays. I learned Avid by looking out of the user manual.
Don't think that you need a college class to do everything. If you think that way then you are limiting yourself.
Really depends on what kind of editing you want to do.
After Effects is great for advanced special effects.
But Sony Vegas is a must-have for some simple stuff, ofcourse.
KDenLive or Sony Vegas.
