Lucky pricks, when I was a kid ICT was shit. Spent the lessons learning how to use MS Office. Edit: I got a D in ICT GSCE and now I'm studying a Degree in Computer Networking, kinda shows how crap it was.
Glad this is happening ICT was the biggest piece of shit in school, never used to go to lesson.
FINALLY. All ICT lessons i had in school were pretty much office skills. Even the "advanced" ict course I did was still office, but macros and visual basic shite :/ Final assignments were always essays as well, how the fuck do you write a 3000 word essay on making a powerpoint. Saying that though, we had a networking module in college which pretty much entailed networking a few pc's with a server and the like in the first lecture. Just ended up playing diablo 2 with the tutor for the rest of the semester. Good times.
Yeah, ICT has always been awful and gives kids the wrong idea what "computing" is about. Obviously learning to type and present information is important, but most kids probably don't realise that computer science if a completely separate area and are put off. Computing is a really interesting subject and I think that everyone should have at least some knowledge and appreciation of how they work. You might not want a job as a computer programmer, but learning how to make a simple program can drastically change the way you look at problems and help you to become a much more logical thinker. That's essentially what computing is - analytical thinking. Looking at a problem, breaking it down into smaller ones and figuring out how to approach each individual part.
Lucky, our school doesn't even have an IT program past the 1st year (Which consists of nothing but Word, how to write emails and Excel) They dropped the already substandard class because they didn't want to have a useless subject, and nobody could pass the standard classes. Also, something tells me the "open source" part is helped along by the Raspberry Pi
"Now move the mouse until its over the little blue e, this is called the internet! now double click, its like 2 clicks really fast." "Who here has heard of google?" -all the little chillins go EWWWW- I hated elementary school computer classes. Hell, I hated all the computer classes.
