Yeah I heard that you can unlock it's dormant core and turn it into a X4 B50 now I just want to know if this set up would be good for doing that. Case: Nxzt Tempest http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811146047 Motherboard: BIOSTAR TA790XE http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138147 GPU: ATI 4850 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161259 Ram: 4gb DDR2 1066 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220397 PSU: hec 585w http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817339012 CPU: phenom II x2 550 be http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103680 I already have the DVD burner, HDD, and OS.
Better PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341016 Better, $40 cheaper case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129042 Cheaper 4850: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102824
Also, you CANNOT guarantee core unlocking, but if your willing take a little bit of luck, then go for it, you also need a SB750 southbridge chipset.
why does no one ever think there's a reason they disabled the other cores
why does no one ever think there's a reason they disabled the other cores
Because people read about one or two cases where it has worked successfully and instantly think it'll work for them too.
If lots of people buy triple and dual cores then AMD have to disable perfectly good quad cores to fill demand, so in this situation core unlocking would work.
If lots of people buy triple and dual cores then AMD have to disable perfectly good quad cores to fill demand, so in this situation core unlocking would work.
They don't just disable them to fill demand, there are cases were one of the cores are faulty, and instead of scrapping it they sell less the core.
If lots of people buy triple and dual cores then AMD have to disable perfectly good quad cores to fill demand, so in this situation core unlocking would work.
do you know how a cpu is made?

Just check the mobo is a M4A7* it doesnt matter about brand.
Just check the mobo is a M4A7* it doesnt matter about brand.
I know im asking alot of questions but, where would I find that?
In the name of the mobo :P
I have this exact processor I don't see what more you could possibly want. My computer flies and handles a lot, what are you using this for? Cuz you could just be shortening it's life. It's like having 16 gigs of ram to run CS:S. Not AT ALL necessary.
Come on a Quad for 102 dollars. That's fucking win. Also nevermind guys I found a guide on how to do it and what mobos support unlocking. Thanks anyways guys.
You may not be able to unlock the the other 2 cores, or it might cause instability if you do.

Though you might need a small voltage boost to get the cores stable. and compared to the phenom 2 quads it's really cheap.
YEs but it isn't going to give you a good performance boost like buying a 955 or 720 X3
But it'll give a pretty good boost especially if I overclock it. Anyways, It's still a bargain.
But it'll give a pretty good boost especially if I overclock it. Anyways, It's still a bargain.
overclocking a core that is suppose to be disabled isn't a really smart idea bah can't find it, just don't expect much better performance cpu
overclocking a core that is suppose to be disabled isn't a really smart idea bah can't find it, just don't expect much better performance cpu
This. I think someone did a test with unlocking and actually lost performance. I'll try and find a source. [editline]03:37AM[/editline] Can't find source.
This. I think someone did a test with unlocking and actually lost performance. I'll try and find a source.
Yes multi core apps will lose performance due to the 1mb L2 cache
And still the 550 on its own is a great little chip, which overclocks very well, so if the unlock doesn't work, just overclock dat bish'. Also if the unlock works, run prime95 on it to make sure it is stable.
