Why do I get this error when trying to start up Maya/3DS Max?

I recently decided to give both of them a try to start on some sort of video game modeling hobby. I got the 3DS Max trial, but it failed with an error. So, I tried for Maya, and got the same error. I've reinstalled and everything but it still doesn't work.

It might be your hardware. The code 0xc0000005 is an access violation error, associated with everything from bad hardware to incorrect drivers to even poorly written programs.

3 Questions:

1) Have you installed/updated any drivers recently?
2) Is your computer capable of running 3ds Max or Maya?
3) Is your RAM going dead?
