• Couple of quick questions if you currently smoke or have in the past

Hello, Ill keep this short. I have a school design project during which I am planning to make a product to help quit smoking. The story behind this is one of my friends is quitting smoking and asked me to hold his pack for him and only give him a certain amount of cigarettes per day. This product will essentially do the same thing. Below are the survey questions, please answer them if you smoke, or have smoked before. 1) Have you ever tried quitting/have quit smoking? (yes/no) 2) If you have tried quitting, have you ever asked a friend to hold your pack in order to help limit your smoking? (yes/no) 3) Would you be interested in a product which dispenses a certain number of cigarettes per day, slowly decreasing the amount every day. (yes/no) This product would essentially hold your cigarettes. You press a button and it dispenses only a certain amount per day. In the first few days it will allow you to have as many as you usually have and then intelligently decrease the amount as time goes on in order to get into the habit of smoking less. If you have any other questions or comments about this I would love to hear them. [editline]Edited:[/editline] If you don't want to answer here, I made a Google forms survey as well. Yes, I tried once or twice, and failed. No, but I've considered it. Problem is the friends that I'd ask to look after my fags would smoke them. The problem with that idea is you're assuming that smoking habits are constant. The amount I smoke a day depends on what I'm doing, if I'm out with friends, if I'm drinking, if I'm with family etc. [editline]21st November 2014[/editline] Something that limited the frequency you smoked would work better for me personally (as in, one every 30 minutes or something) so you couldn't just chain when drunk.
The product you are mentioning has been already invented/existed for awhile, but is now illegal to have in the United States. You cannot legally sell cigs by singles, and even if someone were to purchase this system for home use, it'd become nothing more then a pain in the ass after a certain period of time.
Is being a social smoker a thing, in the same way being a social drinker is? I dont smoke regularly but if someone offers or if I'm out drinking I generally will.

And the frequency feature could be implemented pretty easily later on in development. Thank you for the suggestion! Since they are all of similar size, the mechanism would support most common sizes. Also thank you to the people replying and completing the survey, I really appreciate it. To the people saying it would be easy to go out and buy another pack in order to circumvent the machine... yes it is. But it is just as easy to not chew nicotine gum or not use a vape. All quitting methods involve self control, all this method does, just like many others, is provide some assistance for your self control. In the end it is ultimately the person choosing to go through with the quitting.
