I told my friend I'd help him build his first gaming rig, but he's on a bit of a budget. We're trying to keep the final tally at around $1000, with a maximum allowable budget of $1100. This price does not include a keyboard, mouse, monitor, or operating system.
I've made a tentative build here, but I don't have a whole hell of experience with building PCs. I think this all looks pretty good, but I could use an outside opinion to give it the once-over and let me know if I overlooked anything. Please check for compatibility with all the parts, and if you have any suggestions for something better, throw 'em my way.
Note: This is a PC aimed at mid- to high-level gaming. Guy plays entirely too many MMOs, and wants a computer that can run them all with ease- along with his healthy assortment of FPS'ers. If you're recommending a different case, know that size isn't necessarily an issue, though powerful cooling is definitely a necessity. A bunch of neon lights and windows lose points.
Note Note: How the hell do you disable LED lights on a case, anyway? If we stick with the current case (which, aside from the blue lighting, is just about perfect), we would like to have the option of turning off or removing the fans' LEDs. Not a big deal if impossible, but quite an improvement if it is.

And is there some sort of catch that I'm missing to that 6-core CPU? That seems too good a deal for six 2.8Ghz cores of processing power, doesn't it?
Give me a sec
Dont bother with the six core. Use the money saved to get a 5850, the 5830 is terrible bang for buck. The 6-cores have been proved to give very little performance increase in games.

For reference, get an AMD Phenom II 955 instead
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119215 CM 690 II
This case, the one you chose is basically a vacuum cleaner
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115215 Intel i5 750
The one you chose is pointless for gaming and stuff like that.

That LG Burner is fine
1007.91$
On this case there is an LED Switch.
This is the best you will get.
Awesome case.

Damn you broke my automerge :fuckoff:
Swapped out the CPU for a Phenomm II 955, and upgraded the graphics card to a 5850. Looking pretty good so far.
:fuckoff:
Trust me son I will end you :buddy:
jk
Your build looks alright to me. I think OP could save a bit more on an AMD build though.
Yeh but i think he may aswell get an i5, it's better than the 955 so he may aswell on a $1000 build
By how much? It might get you 3 more frames in a CPU intensive game.

See, I'm not a fan of that case. I've got that one on my current build, and in my experience, it doesn't provide enough cooling. Granted, I'm running two 275's, and the thing (unfortunately) has to be shoved in a cupboard. Since we both live in the barracks, our computers have to be stored in our cabinets- the Xclio case has two MASSIVE fans that are perfectly directed towards sucking in air from the room, rather than the considerably warmer air that start brewing in our little cabinets.
It's probably perfectly adequate for one GPU, but I'll talk it over with him tonight and see what direction he wants to go in for the case. :)
edit Even if he doesn't want it, I'm considering getting that case for myself.
Yes, by a few i admit, but if i had that money i would want something as big as that because he may want to compress a file, install a new game, etc...
Also if he runs a game like GTA IV he will notice a big difference because it is a very CPU based game

Trust me, that case, the II version which i dont think you will have has amazing cooling and so does the non II version. The XCLIO is a load of bullshit, it's made of plastic, and those great big fucking fans just suck air, and dust in and doesnt have a single exhaust fan.
its shit. Trust me.
You could check out the lancool K-62, its a lovely looking case and has 2 fans on the top of it, cant go wrong there.
Shhhh, the NZXT Lexa s has two fans on the top but you dont hear me recommending it :D
NZXT are ricer shit... in my opinion. They look ultra gimmicky.

That's the one I have. I think in order to cut down on my own cooling problems I'll be getting another fan or two. Another for exhaust, and one more for intake. Should do the trick.
For him, I'll take your advice on the case. The one I got is an all-around good case, and with just one card in there it should be more than adequate.
The best air cooled case is the Antec 1200.

No the abs canyon.
Go with the i5 750 if you're at that price range, best budget processor for gaming.

best case in the price range, watch some reviews on utube, and take advice from me. Its great, its a better version of the earlier one, more space and a heck of a lot of fans, theres space for 10fans, which i have filled with great fans, and its the coolest thing in the world. I'm thinking of taking it to the artic to keep the ice caps from melting.
And it comes with 5 140mm fans
