since they take alot a while to beat I am looking for just the top gems I played/still playing. FFVII/FF10 what are some of the other really good one's ( just main game's not spin-offs)
In my opinion, FF9 is the best one.
the theme since FFVII is cyberpunk what is that one.?

I second this, FFIX is great. Definitely worth the play if you can.

FF9 is very fantasy-steampunk based.
6 is hailed as the best from the SNES era and arguably the best overall.
4 has a very good-looking PSP remake and is the one where the FF series actually got a proper story in their game.
Tactics is also a very good game.
what about XII.
I'd say FFIV, my personal favourite of the series and has a pretty great story, not too grindy either if I recall correctly.
If you wanna get FF12, play the IZJS version. It's much, much better.
The DS remake of 4 is fantastic imo
VI. Settle for nothing less.

I prefer the clean updated PSP sprites over the DS 3d models but maybe that's just me.
Go for the GBA remakes of 4 5 and 6. I'd say those are the best of the main series, and for the GBA ports they added in some extra content, updated translations, but kept true to the originals quite well, and the GBA is a great system to emulate (or just play directly since it's still a reasonably available handheld).
Final Fantasy IX is my favorite. I highly recommend it.
Why has nobody mentioned eight, eight is brilliant

XII is really damn good as well, just not story wise. but the monsters being on the field with no battle screen was really refreshing and cool, so much good gameplay to be had
I haven't really gave this series much attention but Tactics Advance on the gameboy was a lot of fun when I played it, like, a decade a go
I apparently am kind of biased, but I say IV and VI. Memorable(mostly) characters, decent though a bit cliched stories, VI is known for being a game where[sp]the villain wins in the first half of the game[/sp].
Fun Fact: Everyone gives the Final Fantasy XIII "saga" shit for being linear, yet in reality EVERY SINGLE Final Fantasy is sadly quite linear. Having access to an Airship or similar method of transportation that lets you revisit old areas or check out spots shown in story sequences does a lot to make a game seem less linear. Despite how what I said sounds, I still feel Final Fantasy XIII and its sequels are among the worst in the series.

I think the distinguishing factor is that FFIV or FFV are linear in the same way that Legend of Zelda is linear, you still have this massive open world to traverse, the game just very clearly wants you to go in a specific order to follow its story. And VI actually goes completely nonlinear for the second half.
The one never made.

I've not played Advance or Advance 2, is it cheerier than Tactics?
Because Tactics was fucking grim.

Yes. Advance and Advance 2 are a lot less openly grim (although the story's focus on escapism is a bit meta and when you really think about it [sp]you're kind of the bad guy in the first one [/sp]), their stories and mechanics are also simplified quite a bit, which is in some ways a blessing since the original was a massive clusterfuck by the end. Mechanically they're very much what you'd expect from a GBA/NDS FFTactics, story wise they're not directly connected to the original, and quite kidified by comparison.
Tactics A2 really suffers from modern Final Fantasy art direction on its story characters though.
