It's shitty that these guys got let go, and I'd certainly like to know the reasoning behind all this.
It just seems like such an unusual move for Valve. I mean, studios fire people all the time, and in even higher numbers, but not Valve (not so far, anyway).
what is going on i'm scared
To be honest I find these lay offs of Valve employees to be absolutely hilarious. Not because several people no longer work for a highly respected studio that is Valve, but because Valve fanboys are seriously getting worried about what is going on in there; and forgetting that Valve, like every other single business in existence, need to make certain decisions from time to time to ensure the survival of the business.
In his recent lecture, Gabe said it's a good thing to know when to fire people.
Imagine if Valve kept all the people they employ, they would be swimming in employees. They might hire new ones as new projects arise, they might even hire some back, but when you fire someone it's usually because of 3 reasons: Bad behavior, lack of money or they're no longer needed. I'm pretty sure Valve is fine on money and I doubt it was because of bad behavior as so many are being fired, so it must be the later.
Allright GabeN, spill the beans.
Valve must have some crazy plans lined up with all the stuff they've been doing recently.

I guess this means Jeri will be back to making youtube videos more often, which I won't complain about as I'm starting to enjoy electronics and love some good video resources. But obviously it's a Portal 3 ARG.
Allright GabeN, spill the beans.
He already did, read the article.
He already did, read the article.
That's as vague and scarce as they could possibly be.
Jesus! By the end of the month there's gonna be no one working at the company! :suicide:
Jesus! By the end of the month there's gonna be no one working at the company! :suicide:
Except Robin and Stavros, obviously :v:
Jesus! By the end of the month there's gonna be no one working at the company! :suicide:
Soon, Valve will be operated by the community and have the community tell them what work on, which Valve intends to operate a business through crowdsourcing.
Jesus for fucks sake people Valve doesn't owe us anything nor is it any of our business to know what goes on in regards to their employees being fired, these are personal matters and aren't any of our concern/problems. Stop acting like Valve HAS to tell their rabid fanboys everything little that happens in their company.
Wasn't there a story from an ex employee that Gabe freaks out when someone gets fired?
People need to stop freaking out about things like this. They are a company, they know what they are doing. Valve employs people to attempt new things and see if they are worth persuing. They probably thought that hardware might be worth it, and now they probably determined it wasn't cost worthy so they got rid of the department. Despite the fact that if they did release hardware I would probably buy some, I am not upset with this seeing as I know valve as a software and game developing company, and that bit has not changed.
He already did, read the article.
that sounds more like he's desperately trying to contain the beans actually
Gee us, this and the three sentences Gabe said about separating Valve from Steam are the over reactions over the year.
As long as nothing gets fucked for us, the consumers... But... Is it just me or Gabe has been weird lately?
Is it just me or Gabe has been weird lately?
[thumb]http://puu.sh/22sWU[/thumb] [editline]14th February 2013[/editline] Maybe he [sp]knew he was gonna start laying off staff and felt horrible about it[/sp].
I blame JJ Abrahams for this.
This is kind of worrying, a lot of the people that were fired were very long time people. Who knows, maybe Gabe wants to take Valve in a new direction and they spoke against it? It wouldnt be weird if like 1 or 2 got fired, thats normal, but a lot got fired all at once and it raises questions. But we wont ever known unless the people fired talks about it because Valve will definitely not talk about it.
