Damn, I'm probably going to cry like a baby when WoW eventually shuts down. (That won't happen anytime soon, though.) It got me through some tough times during middle school.

WoW easily ruined MMOs for me, I'm incapable of getting into other ones the same way I was into WoW. Seeing it after playing WC3 for so long was just way too fucking great.
They should give it to the fans and allow them to set up their own servers. There's no point in holding on to a dead game. I know it sometimes is just a matter of holding on to your assets and avoiding brand erosion, but if Turbine is going to step away from developing MMORPGs anyways I don't see why they couldn't do it.
that's kind of rough to see. I know what it's like in a way. growing up on the internet. and all
I had a similar experience when The Matrix Online finally shut down. There was a pretty solid community there, every Saturday everybody would pile into the biggest night club in the game (Sometimes Club Hel, when it would open for special occasions.) with a live DJ playing the game on the dance floor, so people could request songs. It was called 'The Lizard Lounge' and it was pretty dope. We used to get special appearances by this all female clan called 'Vixens' too. Good times. Mind you, I didn't cry about the loss, just lamented the fact.

Actually, the death of WoW would spark perhaps a massive interest in MMO's again but i doubt it would die anytime soon or not before everyone has already moved on. Having 5.5 million players without a MMO would be healthy for other MMO's

From what I recall hearing, Turbine said years ago that when the servers finally shut down for Asheron's Call for good they'd release custom server software for the game or something along those lines. Wonder if they'll make good on that now.
I get the feels and I understand him. It was sad when I came back to check out servers and mods for half-life 2 . I spent 3 years of my life playing source mods making friends and everything. When you are young you enjoy some things without ever thinking that what you are playing might in fact one day be dead. I am still sad about it but (same goes for half-life 1 mods and even the games) but it taught me a valuable lesson in life. Enjoy some things because they won't exist forever.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure at one point it was a blonde one past 10 million players not too long ago.
Only 5.5 million? Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure at one point it was a blonde one past 10 million players not too long ago.
Player numbers usually spike after the release of a new expansion.
Shit, I thought from the screenshot in the OP it was Everquest for a second. Gonna be seriously bummed whenever that kicks the bucket.
All MMOs will eventually die so enjoy them while they last.
WoW ruined mmos for me in the sense that it's awful and everyone copied it to the point it became the definition of mmo over the more interesting UO style stuff.
Pretty sad SWG swapped its uniqueness to become a WoW clone.
Fuck I'm gonna be bawling like this when Ruenscape dies.
tbh i'll probably feel the same way when facepunch dies
Pretty sad SWG swapped its uniqueness to become a WoW clone.
I wouldn't say it became a WoW clone. WoW clones are better than what SWG became. Going from 500 skillpoints you could spend in any of the 36 profession's tree you wanted (Mastering up to two at any one time, or not mastering any but being spread around in several, or mastering one then mastering another that compliments the first, making no two characters alike) down to 9 professions that are all identical with the same dumb level/XP reward system as any other MMO that makes 90% of the content obsolete once you pass that level It was gross. Everyone became a Jedi after, too. No more Carbineers, Teras Kasi Masters, Doctors, Swordsmen, Riflemen, Rangers, Chefs, Bioengineers, and 20 others. It became so bland and boring. The only part that survived the NGE intact was the Jump to Lightspeed expansion
tbh i'll probably feel the same way when facepunch dies
it's already dead
Man, I can't even begin to feel for this guy.

Couldnt get myself past level 35.
Never really got super invested into any MMOs and even when I played Runescape it was just with rl friends. I have however had online communities I was a part of just die off for one reason or another and it's always unfortunate. Even in today's age of communication unless you get close enough to people to share your actual contact info it's so easy to lose contact with people and even when you maintain contact with a few you never quite have that same community you enjoyed.
Pretty cool and all, i just don't understand why they don't make an event out of games dying like this. Make up a giant monster that gobbles the world, or close the server when a meteor hits on impact. Anything is better than the sudden disconnect, it's like ending on a wet fart.
Same thing happened with me and a game called Face of Mankind. I met people that I've played with and enjoyed the company of for the last seven years. The game was a riot, and truly insanely unique. It was run by the players, for the players. Sadly, down the line the development team lost sight and the game started taking downward turns and losing its credence. After the steam release, a series of game altering changes were made that just caused more and more people to fall off. This is after a kickstarter where tons of people donated crazy amounts of money to keep the game going. The player base cared about it so incredibly much, but alas it died. We've tried to get the devs to give the files or the rights to someone so we can make a server but they just won't. It's such a bummer, I miss the intense zerg fights and the all night final battles and ridiculous RP. Not only that but the game used to be so skilled. Fuck I miss that game, thankfully it created some bonds that are not easily broken. Some of those people are my good friends to this day

I'd think that's just rubbing salt in the wounds.
The game is going to close either way, might as well end on a high note in my opinion.
