Budget £560 and for the UK For use with mainly source games but others too such as STALKER and DNF (when it's released of course) Things I already have

The OS
Keyboard/Mouse
Speakers/Headphones
So basically I need everything to build a computer out of and a monitor I may also need a link to instructions on how to build a computer as this will be my first time doing so :buddy: Thanks in advance!
OS is 64 bit right? Also, are you ok with a small monitor with 1440x900 resoluion (18.5-20 inches)? [editline]22nd January 2011[/editline] Aagh read budget as 660. I'll post another build a bit later
Yes 64 bit it is :) Also I don't really mind what resolution, the highest I've ever used has been 1366x768 so anything higher is perfectly okay! I have an old bookmark from when I was gathering prices (I'm not very knowledgeable with computer parts so I just lurked and found what seemed to be the best within my budget) It's £130 lower than my current budget but it's probably something to work with so here
Asus VH198D 19 Anti-glare, 1440x900 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/179171 AMD Athlon II X4 640 Socket AM3 3GHz http://www.ebuyer.com/product/242140 Samsung HD103SJ Spinpoint F3 1TB http://www.ebuyer.com/product/173804 Samsung SH-S223 22x DVD http://www.ebuyer.com/product/145450 Corsair 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz http://www.ebuyer.com/product/173122 HIS HD 5770 1GB GDDR5 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/241315 XFX Pro 650W Core Edition PSU http://www.ebuyer.com/product/241554 Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3 AMD 770 Socket AM3 ATX http://www.ebuyer.com/product/196403 Antec 300 Three Hundred Case http://www.ebuyer.com/product/143854 557
Thanks! So will I need anything else to build it? I've read about how easy it can be to put them together but do I need an anti static wristband thing? I'm not really sure on where to get one/how to use it :s
Thanks! So will I need anything else to build it? I've read about how easy it can be to put them together but do I need an anti static wristband thing? No anti static wristband required. Just build close to where you gonna use it (so you don't have any worry of dropping it, a mistake I made as I had to bring it down some stairs which was scary) and don't build on carpet. 1) Don't build on carpet/rug *Build on tile or wood preferably 2) Touch a metal object that is grounded to the floor before building and once in a while during to discharge electricity 3) Use standoffs, do not forget standoffs I swear If anyone else posts in here, can you help me give Espio some tips? Also watch some tutorials on Youtube, I forgot this one guy's name but he had really good tutorials. It was like "something Boston".
Okay, do standoffs come with the parts or would I need to get some for myself?
That build isn't really perfect. Get this case http://www.ebuyer.com/product/246639 it's the updated version of the 300. You can save money on the PSU http://www.ebuyer.com/product/141007 and motherboard http://www.ebuyer.com/product/238977 without sacrificing any performance so you can get a better GPU http://www.ebuyer.com/product/233611
I've already ordered the parts but I can probably cancel and reorder and I guess the guy falco is talking about is called thenewboston one of his computer tutorials

Also, I'd get the case Finley suggested. But Finley wouldn't you rather have a better PSU with a slightly slower GPU (5770)? I mean a 5770 will run all the STALKERs really well. And the motherboard: I don't think it's a good idea to cheap out on motherboards.
Well what are the advantages of a better PSU against a better GPU I understand the better GPU would just be able to handle games a little better but what would a better PSU do?
Well what are the advantages of a better PSU against a better GPU I understand the better GPU would just be able to handle games a little better but what would a better PSU do?
A better PSU is more efficient, silent or has a modular design, never cheap out on your PSU, it will blow up in your face if you do so.
The basiq is a perfectly good PSU and it's modular, which the other isn't. As you can see from this review there is a pretty big gap (10-15 FPS) between the two cards http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2010/07/12/nvidia-geforce-gtx-460-768mb-gpu-review/8. I've already saved money in other places so ideally you'd get the xfx PSU and the 460, but as the basiq is fine I'd get the better card if you can't expand your budget
I would get all the things Finley suggested if you want to lower the price for somewhat same performance, but in my opinion it's always good to get a nice motherboard. [editline]23rd January 2011[/editline] http://www.ebuyer.com/product/174597
So the new build would be: Asus VH198D 19 Anti-glare, 1440x900 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/179171 AMD Athlon II X4 640 Socket AM3 3GHz http://www.ebuyer.com/product/242140 Samsung HD103SJ Spinpoint F3 1TB http://www.ebuyer.com/product/173804 Samsung SH-S223 22x DVD http://www.ebuyer.com/product/145450 Corsair 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz http://www.ebuyer.com/product/173122 PNY Geforce GTX 460 1GB GDDR5 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/233611 Antec Basiq Power 550W PSU http://www.ebuyer.com/product/141007 ASROCK M3A770DE 770 Socket AM3 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard http://www.ebuyer.com/product/174597 Antec One Hundred 100 Case http://www.ebuyer.com/product/246639 totalling £545,98
Looks good.
Anything I could get with the extra £15? Although I'll probably be spending that much returning some of the stuff to get the better things because Ebuyer seems to have a really bad cancelling policy so I'll need to wait for it then return it :(
You may as well get a better case: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/239757 or a CPU cooler if you want to overclock: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/245376 or maybe a case fan: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Scythe-Case-Gentle-Typhoon-D1225C12B4AP-14/dp/B001CSH8ZY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1295889196&sr=1-2
So what exactly have they done to upgrade the 300? Painted it black inside?
So what exactly have they done to upgrade the 300? Painted it black inside?
CPU backplate cutout, better cable management (which was almost nonexistant on the 300)
You may as well get a better case: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/239757 or a CPU cooler if you want to overclock: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/245376 or maybe a case fan: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Scythe-Case-Gentle-Typhoon-D1225C12B4AP-14/dp/B001CSH8ZY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1295889196&sr=1-2
Sorry, I'm not able to have the extra money because of how much it's costing to send them back, it's not worth sending the 300 back either because that's the heaviest object so it'll cost me £15 to send the case alone :( which gives me all of £2 to send everything else Luckily the graphics card and psu and motherboard are light(ish) so it won't be such a big price meaning I can still get the other graphics card etc
Would the better GPU be compatible with the motherboard I was getting originally? Because I could just make some extra money and it would be less hassle than returning loads of heavy things (namely the PSU and Motherboard) [editline]25th January 2011[/editline] Namely This motherboard http://www.ebuyer.com/product/196403 and this GPU http://www.ebuyer.com/product/233611
Yeah [editline]25th January 2011[/editline] They are compatable
