So i currently am stuck using my shit laptop. Half the time when i run GMod it crashes before i can start my own listenserver.
I have all my settings set to low and it still seems to have a hard time. What else can i alter to make GMod run smoother? I don't care if models are hideously blocky, i just want to be able to debug lua scripts ingame.
What kind of GPU is in the laptop? If its HD graphics 2000 or 3000 you're gonna have a bad time.
What are you on about? Intel HD Graphics 3000 is fine, 2000 could be a little rough, but source scales pretty well. So long as you have dx 9 you should be fine.
It's got an ATI Mobility Radeon X1600. Back in like 2008 it ran shit like HL2 on med-high pretty well. I reformatted it recently but it can't run much anymore. And i think the thermal paste is starting to wear off.
Did you install the drivers for the card from the AMD website? The default drivers that come with Windows or on Windows Update are generic and terrible.
And thermal paste shouldn't wear off unless you removed the heatsink. Your exhaust blower in the laptop may be blocked with hair and dust (which is a common problem on older laptops.) You can remove the heatsink to check, but unfortunately some laptops are shit and require you to disassemble the entire thing to get at the heatsink.
You need to try and find the latest drivers it took me ages since the ones from manufactures like HP are outdated and ATI didn't continue support for the X1600 that well yet you can get even later drivers by editing some ini files to get the driver from other versions of the X1600.
Now I can play games like Stalker on medium-high but Game booster helped get rid of any small lag I was still experiencing

I did get some fairly up to date drivers when i reinstalled everything. I dunno where to look, every download i've tried said it wasn't compatible with my system even though it says it's for 32 bit windows xp pro.
It's easier for you, I had to get them to work with Windows 8
I had an old graphics bug in gmod on my old shitty laptop, It fixed itself if I oppend Gmod in directX 8, you tried that?
