Hey, I got my new laptop for Uni and I need some suggestions on a free and useful Word Processor that i can use for typing up essays and such. Similar to Microsoft word and so on.
I don't really know a whole lot about these sort of subjects but I hope you guys can suggest me some good ones that i can download for free.
libreoffice, it's essentially a free version of microsoft word.
ftfy
I use openoffice too, free and all you'll ever need...
Righto, that seems to have settled it. Thanks a lot everyone!
Just recently switched to openoffice and realised its practically Office, everything is the same but its free

I think we all felt so when switching from MS Office to openoffice.
The only problem is, MS Office is more widely used, and I've had some problems with people that couldn't open the Openoffice files on their computer. But I never had a single problem with OpenOffice itself!
OpenOffice is a bit awkward but pack bunch of power just like MS Office
I've changed it so it saves into office format by default because i just know one say i'll bring my work into school and it'll be in open office format
Openoffice for essays, notepad++ for everything else.
I first read the above post as this
Openoffice for essays, notepad for everything else.
and thought what the hell?

Just save whatever you are doing in .doc format. Fairly simple. Though Word might fuck with the formatting slightly, it has done in the past with my work.
Whoa, whoa, whoa. What's with the people suggesting OpenOffice? LibreOffice is a (much better) fork of the same thing.
Sorry guys LibreOffice. http://www.libreoffice.org/
A fork of OpenOffice that is not under Oracle's control, besides it has a few more features than OpenOffice has right now.
LibreOffice
OpenOffice
Or, if you want to fork out some cash, Microsoft Office :v:
OpenOffice is usually only complained about by people who bought M$ office.
Is OpenOffice even worked on anymore? There hasn't been an update for a long time.

I heard that Oracle stopped it's development. The team, then, decided to continue it under the name LibreOffice, free from Oracle's control.
If you have a constant internet connection, Use Google Docs, You can change them into .doc files...
If not, LibreOffice.
Ok, changed to Libre Office now haha

Seems very similar to OpenOffice...

That's because it is OpenOffice. It's a fork off the same code, except that LibreOffice actually receives updates and is completely separated from Oracle.
There's no reason to use OpenOffice anymore.

I see, sounds interesting... I might give it a try.
Use vim.

Use notepad. Who needs formatting anyway.
cat > file.txt
