I'm not really sure what to think of this. On the one hand, BioWare Montreal has done a FANTASTIC job on it's past Mass Effect work. On the other hand, this makes me feel uneasy: "We are exploring new directions, both on the gameplay and story fronts. You can still expect the pillars the franchise is known for to be fully intact though, including diverse alien races, a huge galaxy to explore, and of course rich, cinematic storytelling." I'd rather not have them re-design everything from the ground-up and end up with some half-baked bastard offspring like Dragon Age 2. I'd much rather them just improve the gameplay of the past games.
I am absolutely certain that this game will be sub par to the trilogy.
Next Mass Effect? Err [editline]12th November 2012[/editline] I mean yeah, I liked the series, I'd gladly play more, but err the trilogy ended

Err [editline]12th November 2012[/editline] I mean yeah, I liked the series, I'd gladly play more, but err the trilogy ended[/QUOTE]It made them a lot of money, so until it stops making them money they will keep making more. I haven't enjoyed Mass Effect since the first one, but I'm interested to see what they can do with this.
I hope to god they're exploring JETPACKS; couple jetpack-based mobility with open-world exploration and they could potentially make one of the most awesome Mass Effect games to date, even if they dive into a dark void to accomplish it. Still, the fact they claim to keep to rich "cinematic" storytelling is a bit concerning; don't get me wrong, I LOVE the story and rich parts, but I'm hoping they don't rely too heavily on "cinematic" to carry the game, since as a cool cat once said, the best way to deal with storytelling and gameplay is to interweave them seamlessly with one-another. The way Mass Effect and Dragon Age deal with the dialogue system is pretty neat, and to an extent weaves gameplay into storytelling, so hopefully they rely more on that, rather than continuing to ride Michael Bay's purple python in regards to "cinematic experiences", which seemed to be the direction that ME3 inched towards at times. That being said, I still thought the Rannoch Destroyer boss fight was kinda cool, even if it didn't feel as epic as most boss fights that involved really big enemies. Personally, one way I would want to fight a Reaper in the next Mass Effect (if they do it right this time around) would be climbing up the beast and blasting it's limb joint servos to pieces; though it'd need to be less like Lords of Shadow's "colossus fights" and more like Shadow of the Colossus did it, albeit with guns, biotics and tech powers involved. Couple that with a fucking jetpack, and you have a great pre-cooked stuffing to put into a hopefully enjoyable Mass Effect space turkey, given that we first extract the giblets of poor writing and/or scripted bullcrap.
oh god please don't fuck it up. the one thing i was hopeful for was the next mass effect having the same character writers. The people who wrote Mordin/Garrus/Genophage/Tuchanka etc are still in my good books. But if they aren't going to work on the next Mass Effect, will the characters be as lovable? Then again, this is EA. They probbaly won't give a shit about characters and will just turn ME in to Futuristic TPS #37378357351
Not actually played/bought Mass Effect 3. So I might just forget about it and get this when it comes out.

Bioware said that ME3 would be the end of Shepard's trilogy, but it;'s entirely possible there could be tie ins or bits of info you'll miss. (This is assuming that the next game is a sequel. It probably isn't going to be during that two year timeframe in which Shepard is dead, sadly. Two years is a very very long time.)
imo as far as expansion goes this series is dead
[sp]You have such an interesting open world, with all this implied lore and interesting shit you could explore in the future, and then you go and have it go through the apocalypse. Fucking seriously, if any game could have benefit from the generic "AMERICA WINS HAPPY ENDING A++" scenario, it's Mass Effect.[/sp]
[QUOTE=Stopper;38422354]I am absolutely certain that this game will be sub par to the trilogy.[/QUOTE] I'm sorry but the game can't get any worse than 3. I hope they go back to the roots of the series and make it more like ME1 but EA probably wouldn't be too happy with that.
More interesting is that Producer Casey Hudson (of 'the ending will be vicarious and uplifting' fame) is much more distanced from the project, he's still Executive Producer, but he's still in Edmonton and the day to day running will be done by someone else. I'm just glad that this means after DAIII, Bioware Edmonton will be doing a new IP.
Watch this new game be based off some character noone cares about from the other mass effect games

Then again I dunno if Mr Hudson was one of the main guys who started the Mass Effect IP, so take the comparison with a bit of salt if you will. (by that I mean it's probably not a completely seamless comparison)

Huh, so my comparison of Hudson and Lucas was more legit than I initially thought it was. Neat, I guess.
Hmm, now when I visit one of my close friends, I can go and bitch at Bioware if they do something wrong. Fun times.
to be fair, montreal has done an excellent job with the multiplayer on me3, and they're still updating and adding content to it. I'm alright with a new game in the mass effect universe, it's huge and very little of the story has been told in game, you can learn tons and tons online in the wiki and stuff. There's a lot of content that can be explored in upcoming games, but I don't really think the game should carry the mass effect name. I don't want "Mass Effect 4" or "Mass Effect: First Contact", that makes it seem like a spinoff, almost. I don't know, I just don't want either of the above names to happen.
garrus effect: asari wine
