Supposedly it's 'gentlemanly' behaviour, as did back in the early 1900s I suppose. I just always drink like this, however, so I'm not so sure.
My pinky doesn't make contact with the glass or mug when I'm drinking. It doesn't point directly out, it's sort of gnarled and... hanging off of my hand basically.
