Jesus christ this Tomb Raider thumbnail, I've got two cases where I fucked up my playthrough with save states, both cases were me getting stuck to death, both cases averted with Cheat Engine power. Got crash on Uncharted 1 speedrun which busted the savefile, though it's not much tragic, still left me somewhat worried if it could affect other saves or data. Perhaps the worst case was the dumbest decision to turn off PS3 while it was checking/repairing it's filesystem, it just seemed like it was stuck forever - lost plenty of saves with 100% progressions that have been there.
Version-switching overwrote my Minecraft saves lol
Whenever I use hammer I save constantly so that way when hammer inevitably crashes I haven't lost that much work. Until hammer decided to crash while saving.

I used to host a minecraft server for my friends in 2011, decided to fuck about with TNT then accidentally overwrote the backup. 6 months of fun, gone
this post contains spoilers lads!!! at least a few where i didnt tag it because it'd be a lot of a hassle!! I was playing the new PREY, right, and started the game like any other. Being who I am, I blasted through the start, then the arboretum, quarters and up to the broken cargo area until I had to return to the lobby. It got weird then, though. For one, I got a weird mission marker that told me to speak to January -- even though I already did. At the start of the game. Things didn't lighten up there. I had to go down to the reactor to do things there, and at that point returning to the lobby crashed the game over and over again. I had to quicksave before and after reaching the reactor just to make sure I don't crash and have to start all over. When I ended up returning to the lobby and being around the end of the game where [sp]you have to kill one of dahl's robot lackeys[/sp] and headed for the start area again, a voice called out to me. "You made it. Ready for your first real view of the world?" At this point I actually freaked out. I was nearly finished with the game's "true" ending and now the temporal dimensions are overlapping and the past is becoming the present. I ended up doing what I had to do, and then reached yet another block. Going to the Arboretum crashed the game. I had to start all over.
I use a backup assistant now so shits all set for me tbh http://beanland.net.au/AutoVer/
I had my backup battery on Pokemon Gold die right before reaching Mt. Silver and somehow this resulted in most of my mons (including the box legendaries and my starter) disappearing from it in addition to the inability to save. I was not happy back then.
Lost my old Bitcoin wallet.dat
I was finishing an animation in sfm that took like a month of work, and my htc usb adapter that was plugged into my power strip started smoking like a chimney from the usb port. I freaked out, quickly saved my project and turned off the power at the wall. Guess it was still saving when I did because the file was corrupted when I loaded it back up. Had to start all over again.
Not me, but this guy who I was friends with was a huge annoying dick, and he saved a new game over my Sapphire version save. I don't remember how long I was into the game, probably halfway or something, but it pissed me off so fucking much. It still does, especially when I remember that cunt's face, with that shit eating smile that could rival Skrelli's... He got what he deserved later though. He shat himself during a flight to one of our islands on a Bball game trip. Everyone laughed at him. Was known from there on out as a simple shitlord.
Not necessarily save corruption, but save dickery. I remember playing Prince of Persia Sands of Time. Got to a big bad boss guy and some how the game autosaved RIGHT as the guy swung at me. So I was in a constant loop of dieing, loading, dieing, loading. I remember spending hours trying to get out of that horrible loop of death.

On the third level first chapter you have this stupid part were you have to jump on lifts and if you fall you die and respawn at latest save file. I accidentally saved mid air during a fall, endlessly dying and dying
My brother overwrote a Ratchet & Clank save on the last level by starting a new game and accidentally saving over that one. We never finished that game. Also my dad lost all progress in the lost island chapter of Tomb Raider 5 by accidentally saving while falling to his death instead of loading.
When I was early in working with Maya, I saved a file in .mb format. Got corrupted during the save and lost the entire thing, got an F on the project. RIP
A 'game'(actually an edit of the sample that shipped with it) I made in RPG Maker PSX and the custom graphics got corrupted when I tried to transfer them to PC. As in the file on PC was corrupt and somehow the files on the memory card had gotten corrupt. And that was how the character that was a Vending Machine that attacked by shooting candy ceased to be.
Half-Life 2 autosaved right as the Hunter-Chopper's machinegun was warming up.
My little brother once saved over my dad's Gran Turismo 3 save file. 200+ hours invested in it
Games for Windows Live erasing my GTA IV save. I hated the driving in that game, but got to a point where I was good at it and was able to tolerate it for the sake of the story being interesting. Got like 20 hours in before my progress went poof. Decided that I'm never playing the game again. I don't want to go through 20 hours of bullshit again for the sake of a somewhat interesting story.
I was more than halfway through Metal Gear Solid 2 when the save file somehow got corrupted. Haven't played it since. There was also one time I was at the very last part of Kingdom Hearts 2 but I stopped playing it for awhile, then when I got back I forgot about it so I started a new game and saved over that file and realized it at the last moment.
I started playing Prototype 2. Fun enough game, just let the Autosave do it's thing, only made one manual save because Autosave was doing a fine enough job. Well one day the game decides it's going to do its first ever hard crash and when I reload the game it lost the Autosave file...I was near the end of the main game roughly 8 hours in. All I had was my manual save which was around an hour into the game. I refuse to play that game anymore. Fuck you Prototype 2.
2014 I got mugged after walking home from a night of drinking. Got cracked over the head with a skateboard (discovered afterward due to the grip-tape marks on my scalp) without even realizing what was about to happen then waking up already on my feet with one eye swollen shut and not much memory of the actual events. Lost my house keys, headphones and primarily my PSP-1000 which had my save files for Silent Hill: Origins, Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection some other games, then my Metal Gear Solid: Peacewalker data! I poured over 250+ hours into my save file and I had almost everything I wanted to get in that game then BAM! (literally) Gone. I'm not even mad about the almost bleeding to death part, I just want my damn save files back. :v:
I invested a lot of hours into an old Sacred character, a Wood Elf. I had an excellent build and one day I decided I needed to reformat my PC because it was feeling a bit slow. Halfway through re-installing Windows XP at the time, I asked myself the question "was there anything worth saving", only to then answer myself the sinking answer of "yes... yes there was..." Since then, I could not bring myself up to do it all over again.
I invested a lot of hours into an old Sacred character.... Since then, I could not bring myself up to do it all over again.
Similar situation here, except it was a Dwarf, and instead of reformating, I accidentally deleted the whole folder with the saves in it. Or was it that I deleted the whole game? Can't remember which, but either way, I accidentally deleted both my Dwarf and my sister's character. She was furious, I couldn't believe myself and cried, and at some point, we just lost our main disc for the game, leaving us with only the expansion pack. Got it on Steam now, but haven't had the will to redo it all.
