Now that i'm basically done with college and the laptop I used while I was there is dead, i'm looking to build a desktop PC for my personal use.
Here's what I came up with: http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=19823851
If I buy most of them before May 27, which i'm planning on doing, it'll be discounted an additional $75 with mail-in rebates and offers down to ~$853
I really like the case, and would like to keep it in the build if possible
Also, the motherboard comes with 8GB RAM, although i'll probably eventually replace the ram or something because it's prob shit.
The DVD drive is supposedly very loud (and cheap) so that will be replaced eventually as well; right now it's just in there in case I ever need to pop a DVD in or burn one
I might be forgetting something else as well, because I haven't built a computer in a long time
Requirements:
- I prefer Nvidia, as their OpenGL support is almost always far better than ATI/AMD
- Fairly simple to upgrade in the future
- Relatively quiet
Used For:
- Gaming
- Programming/Compiling
- Basic 3D modelling
- whatever the fuck else I feel like doing
Other Info:
- I'll look into getting a new monitor at a later point in time. I have an pretty terrible old one (CRT) I could use in the meantime.
- Have windows 7 key/disk, will dual-boot with arch-linux as well
- Already have speakers/sound system, mouse, and keyboard
- I'll also look into getting an SSD eventually, but I don't need or care for one atm
- I have a 2TB external backup harddrive, so I can use that to offload some space if necessary
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130645 little cheaper motherboard with the same 8gb RAM deal. The RAM isn't bad so don't worry about replacing it, although I'm not sure how it'll handle a single stick of RAM compared to dual channel. Also get an i5-3570k instead so you can overclock it in the future. The H60 has pretty poor cooling for its price, something like a HAVIK 140 would have a lot better cooling and is ~$60 I think.
If you're fine with waiting a little while longer, the new Intel CPUs are coming out within a few weeks. The same price for an average of 10% performance increase is worth waiting for if you're not in a hurry.

my next 2 paydays are on May 23rd, and June 6th, so if I waited until June 6th i'd have a little more cash to dole out on this. But i'd also lose out on some of the sales if I waited entirely until then. I'll look into buying everything else, but holding off on the CPU until my 2nd payday, unless it will be out later than than june 6th.

RAM goes over my head a lot, so it's good to know that it's actually decent. And i've never done watercooling before, so i'm pretty terrible at choosing those.
I swapped the H60 for the HAVIK 140, and saved like $3.
I also upgraded the CPU to i5-3570k, and gained ~$25.
Although as I said before, I will probably hold off on buying the CPU and wait for them to release the new CPU line.
thanks for the heads up though.

i'm dumb and forgot to talk about the motherboard.
it is ~$20 cheaper, but I also downgrade 2 of my USB 3.0 to 2.0, and I also don't have a displayport port, and i'd also lose a rear eSATA port, although i'd gain a "coaxial S/PDIF Out" if I swapped. It's also a toss-up between ASUS & MSI, although I am generally fond of asus motherboards.
overall i'd say the one I picked is worth the $20 extra.
-You wont be using the display port. But instead you are using your GPU.
-eSATA (does anyone ever use this?)
-Less USB 3.0. Well your choice. In my personal opinion I really dont care as long as my front ports are 3.0 for file writing to usb stick. Your mouse etc wont work better on 3.0 compared to 2.0
