Odd thead title, I know.
I was searching for something about 7 in google when i saw this:
"Why Microsoft can't afford Windows 7 to fail"
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/8310867.stm
Let's just quote a section here
More importantly, three years ago Microsoft botched the release of Vista, the operating system that preceded Windows 7.
Vista - a bloated, difficult to install operating system - left many early users with suddenly unusable hardware and software. The disaster badly undermined Microsoft's credibility with consumers and software developers.
Today, Vista is still outshone by its eight-year-old predecessor Windows XP. One (particularly low) estimate from web metrics firm Net Applications suggests Vista has a mere 18.6% share of the market. Others put it at just over 35%, which is still a poor figure.
Among companies, "Vista is the worst-adopted operating system", according to Annette Jump, research director at Gartner, a technology research firm.
The president of Microsoft International, Jean-Philippe Courtois, opts for understatement: "We don't feel great about Vista adoption."
Windows reloaded
Windows 7 is Microsoft's one and maybe only chance to redeem itself. "We have learned a lot from what went wrong with Vista," is a mantra repeated by every Microsoft executive.

Neither of the quotes in bold have much truth. But here's what gets me.

Bullshit. They use the same installer. The only difference is that 7 doesn't ask you what version to install. If you find that difference to make Windows Vista "difficult to install", then you're a fucking idiot.

Again, the only difference is the color of the highlighted selection.
My point of this thread is I don't understand why people hate Vista so god damn much, yet they say Windows 7 is godly compared to it. "Oh, it's so much cleaner and easier to use!" Bullshit, it's the same with a new look.
I love 7 more than I do Vista though, but I hate how people mindlessly say that 7 is a whole different world in terms of features compared to Vista, when in reality they're mostly the same. I guess people are just idiots.
Well, Windows 7 didn't crash 3 times on a brand new machine the first time I installed it... I guess that's a start. Though I never heard anything else from the guy I built a machine for thereafter, so it was probably a temporary problem.
EDIT: Though yeah, the install was definitely the same...
how old are you that you need help installing it
I hope it has a huge flaw in it that makes it worse than Vista. Then maybe Microsoft would learn to fix their mistakes instead of covering them with a slightly modded Vista with a New name.

Bullshit, my installer asks me if I want to install Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate.
Three ways to make 7 superior to Vista.
-> One version. Nobody wants 100 OS versions where only the 100th gives them what they need.
-> No UAC. Seriously, If I buy a PC, it's my PC, I'll do what I want. Let people learn from their mistakes.
-> Use the old Windows interface. I don't want to learn where everything is again. I'm not buying a new OS so I can learn to use my computer again.

Sorry but if you have so much trouble buying the right version of your OS, disabling the UAC and learning to use a new interface (which is not that much of a difference) then you might want to buy yourself a Mac.

every os changes get over it, technology changes keep up or get left behind

I agree with the different versions thing. They could easily just put all the features in one version to save hassle, and just make it a bit more expensive
Agreed.

maybe you like paying for features you don't want and won't use, but I prefer spending money wisely

Windows 7 is fixing their mistakes :downs:
Windows 98: Windows XP
Windows 2000 (and not ME anymore): Windows Vista
Windows XP: Windows 7
maybe you like paying for features you don't want and won't use, but I prefer spending money wisely
When I say more expensive I was thinking £10 at the most.
Windows 7 oughta be great. As long as it doesn't wipe my laptop twice, I'm good
Yea, I mean my only problem with Windows 7 at the moment are incompatible drivers and that's not exactly microsofts fault either. They've definently done something correctly.
Bullshit, my installer asks me if I want to install Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate.
When you buy it retail and don't torrent it instead it doesn't ask you.
-> No UAC. Seriously, If I buy a PC, it's my PC, I'll do what I want. Let people learn from their mistakes.
The reason they have UAC is because running every program as an administrator is completely stupid. It easily allows viruses to execute with full root priviledges, and therefore is a big no-no. UAC is basically MS' late response to sudo on UNIX, and it does its job pretty well, and there's little reason to remove it. If you wish to disable that security feature, you are able to using the built-in menus.

Looks like they learned that XP did have flaws :)

If you want XP then buy XP.

Not really. The default user is still Administrator which is still a huge flaw. And all you have to do to make UAC go away is to click "OK". Most people just click OK because they're so used to it.
Linux/sudo requires a password.
The only people who really complained about vista were
People who's computers are too obsolete to run vista correctly
People who know jack shit about computers.
Honestly.... I am not really VERY tech savvy.... But I know enough. Its so simple to do this.

It's only a flaw if you're a computer illiterate dumbshit. Me, I know what I'm doing, and I hate being restricted as a user. I need admin accress to everything because I make TONS of system-wide changes. I don't like being bothered to be "elevated" every 5 fucking seconds I'm on my PC.
well i just pre-ordered my copy of windows 7 64 bit
and only for £30, god i love being a student
I'm not a student, but I'm in school, so I can also get it for ~£30.
If you want XP then buy XP.
I don't want XP. I want the newest OS with all the security updates, patches and features.
I don't want XP. I want the newest OS with all the security updates, patches and features.
Sounds like you want Windows 7?
Sounds like you want Windows 7?
Lol.
People are going to be all "RAGE RAGE RAGE RAGE" about this, but for some reason, I just like 7 better than Vista. Maybe it's the superbar, maybe it's the UAC removal, maybe it's just shinier, it simply appeals to me more.

99% of the time, the person installing Windows would be the kind of person who would need to be under an Admin account.
