Hey!
I have heard allot about services like Navi X and Icefilms, I know that those services are legal because they dont host the content and only link it. Its all streamed stuff but you can download too. Can one get caught for streaming? There seems to be a large amount of people saying you cant but to me that sounds like a bit of a copyright myth. Its just the same as downloading only your not keeping the file.
Whats your stance on this?
Well, it all depends if they have license for it. Netflix is a streaming service, HBO has streaming service as well. There is also places like Hulu etc.
They're legal though because they have the rights for it.
I haven't checked up on the ones you've mentioned though.
Copyright laws maybe are for distribution and broadcast. If a site is linking to material it generally is not at risk. If a site is hosting and displaying this content it is in violation. Like twitch, it broadcasts content if it were a TV show, the site could have action taken against it.
To make it legal obviously, sites purchase licenses to broadcasts and/or distribute the content.
Could it get the user in trouble? I should imagine it could get the owner of the content in trouble.
User, not likely but still possible. Owner, very much yes.
Why would it get the owner of the content in trouble? It's theirs? They'd be the ones generally going after those showing it and sharing it.
Rate me bad reading. I thought he meant the owner of where the content was being stored.
Yes generally it's the owner of the site who gets in trouble. Though sites like twitch, youtube, vimeo go after users who do this.
Yeah basically what Icefilm Navi X is, is basically a portal linking to streams from other websites with TV SHows that have been uploaded only its in XBMC so you dont have to bugger about with different interfaces/websites. Sounds really good.
Linking to pirated content is still illegal, just like how thepiratebay isn't legal in the US even though they only link to content, not store it. People have been arrested for it.
How are we to know what country you live in? Different rules applies all over the world.
I live in the UK.

I asked my ISP about it back in 2011 and apparently ofcomm has prevented ISP's from pursuing their users about potential copyright infringements due to the high number of incorrect cases (back in 2006 I received 2 letters from my ISP for downloading certain files and each time they cut off my service for a select number of days though only one of those times was infringement).
Instead it is left up to the copyright holders or companies working on their behalf to catch potential infringers of their material.
Personally I've never heard of anyone who has downloaded copyrighted materials being caught/arrested. People who distribute such information on the other hand do get caught and receive hefty fines for it. Keep in mind that because of the way torrents work you are downloading and uploading (sharing/distributing) the data at the same time. And most copyright holders also seed/leech these torrents to harvest IP's of the connected peers.
You're talking about sites which use http/rtmp streaming, the chances of you being caught are pretty much non-existent as there is no way for copyright holders to monitor who is streaming the file, unless of course the site is a trap site or the site in question is collaborating with the copyright holders.
