I worked on alphabirth and there really was love for the game, it's not like people didn't want to make stuff, the talent really was there but burnout due to the atrocious API led to it falling through.
Nicalis has only shown itself to be a worse and worse developer as time went on. It's sad to see a modding community quite literally die so quickly.

I've heard from fans of cave story that Nicalis was a bit of a shit show with that too? I dunno, it's just really disappointing.
