Well I want to get into playing but I've got no guitar and I don't have a ton of money. I want an electric guitar under 200 australian dollars (from an aussie site preferably, cause internationally shipping a guitar will cost a ton). It doesn't have to be amazing, especially for that price, but I don't know a lot about guitars. Not sure what guitars cost over seas compared to in australia, but for reference my brothers squire strat costed 400 australian dollars. If you can recommend a cheap amp that'd be great too. I posted this here instead of the music forum because it doesn't get much replies.

No seriously, go on ebay and just browse some cheap guitars
Go to a local shop.

My first one was from Ibanez GiO series, my friend gifted it, it was about 200-250$ I think. Many guitars with this price tags suck, but the one I had, well it wasn't perfect, but it was really great for it's money.

I found one on ebay for $250.

Is this good? Hows it compare to a squire strat?
I have a Squier Strat by Fender. You can probably find one for under 200. Not sure why your brother's cost 400.
I have a €700,- Fender Jaguar, but i use my €270,- Danelectro dead on '67 the most, great neck, unique sound, stays in tune better than other cheap guitars I've had.

It's also very light for a solid body.

I'm still new to the guitar, been playing for a little more than 1/2 year, but my dad have been doing it for 20 years now, he says this one is pretty good too, but suggest that you go to a store or someone who sells it locally, because the model of the guitar doesn't matter as much as how you are comfortable with it. You need to take it in your hands, play a little (or as someone to play for you) and if you feel uncomfortable with it, don't buy it. Looks of the guitar matters a lot too - you need to love the looks of it or you will not have a lot of motivation to play it after two weeks.
Oh and don't be afraid to buy a good amplifier. It matters even more than a good guitar.

I'm not afraid to buy a good amp, but I don't wanna drop $400 on one. I'm not really serious about the guitar, I'm not getting lessons or anything, I just want to learn and play as a hobby. Also wouldn't local stores be much more expensive than ebay?

My Dad lives in Russia so I learned completely on my own too. Only found some lessons on how to hold it properly, how to do things like hammer ons and pull offs etc, and how to hold a pick right. Only the basic stuff you can't play without. Then you just look up on Tabs of your favorite songs, they tell you where to place your fingers and what strings to pick - all you need to know about how to play it. Then you just do it slowly, then more quickly and that's how you learn to play the electric guitar.
I don't even know notes or any theory's on music and playing, but after 6 months I can play this examples perfectly:

I play sometimes for a hour a day, sometimes 2-3, sometimes I don't play for a week. Just play when you want, if you want to learn fast and will play when you don't want to play you will not have any progress or fun.
The guitarists in two above videos haven't had a teacher too, they just played in their rooms for as long as they wanted. Maybe I'm doing something wrong about teaching myself, but I play good, I get a lot of fun, my friends get a lot of fun listening to me - what more do you need?
Oh and source on tabs for the future: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/
cheap
decent
guitar
Pick two.
But seriously, just go down to the local guitar shop (if you have one around where you live) and ask around. Why order online?
I bought a pretty decent guitar from a store that was closing down and selling all their stock for around $120. That was a good deal I guess. Don't know how that will benefit you thought.

In Australia? Not possible to get a nice guitar from a shop for under $200.
It's hard enough from elsewhere, but I do see good guitars get sold (used) in the US for $300USD or so as a bare minimum for what I would consider a decent guitar. If you want a decent guitar, your best bet is to watch online classifieds, and get a guitar shipped from the US. You'll probably have to spend $400-500 all up.
When you're talking about guitars, $500 is still cheap especially if you're getting a decent guitar. $200 will only get you crap unless you buy from someone who doesn't know how much their guitar is worth (I have seen an Ibanez RG7621 get sold on US Craiglist for $200 because the guy though it was a 7321, and that is one fucking amazing deal :v:, especially considering that the 7321 is sold for $1000 new here in Asutralia, and the 7621 is a much better guitar).
If you really can only spend $200 and don't want to go international, at least try to buy a used guitar, aim for a Squier Strat Standard (probably $300-500 new, mine was $500 a few years ago). I still play my Squier Strat a lot, even though I own a Japanese made Ibanez. They're really decent guitars.
Well he bought it new.
I bought mine new. It was just over 200.
Air electric guitar - $0. Warning: Hands not included.

This one is really good. I have one too, and according to my teacher, it's sound is really good.
[editline]14th November 2010[/editline]
He plays over 20 years.
I got a B.C Rich Mockingbird ST for about $300. It was used by a collector so it was just on his wall and he wanted to sell it for a different one. It's usually around $800-$1000. DEAL!
[editline]14th November 2010[/editline]
And just get the Squires Strat by Fender. I started with that. BUT DO NOT SELL IT, It only sells for about $80 in most places in stores. Just sell it on Ebay.

I agree
I don't like Danelectros either
1959 Gibson Les Paul, those ones are cheap man
the Schecter starter guitars are really great.
I have a fender squire, and have had it for 10 years, its small, but it plays great, pretty durable too.
Go with the mexican fender strat, really good guitar for not too much money.
about $200 usa. dont know how much it is austrailian
Could buy mine off me, its a rockburn guitar and has never been used, also comes with an amp. Duno how much aussie money £60 would be though.
EDIT: Also shipping might be a bit steep, better give it a miss actualy.

Looks decent, but aussie ebay doesn't have any, and american shipping is very expensive.
Are these combos any good?

The guitars are nothing special obviously, but they're cheap as hell and come with an amp.
