Didn't he already have a personal story?
This is a remake, though so everything you know is wrong.
So he hates killing but suddenly he doesn't mind killing everyone, it's not like the game discourages you to do it from what we've seen.

If everything I know of thief is now wrong at least its still better than what they are trying to make.
Didn't he already have a personal story?
Yup. His story from the original trilogy was fine.
Does it need to be any more complex than, "Kid is poor, kids gets into stealing things, finds that stealing this is not only profitable, but fun too, kid grows up to be a master theif." I'm not sure what the story was before but I feel like if they're going to rewrite his character they might as well go with something on those lines.
I'm goddamn sick and tired of backstories being filled with loss and death and crying, there are thousands more motivations than "I have to avenge my family" or whatever that are much more interesting and still emotionally deep. No video game hero these days seems to want or aspire to something, they're just pushed into a scenario and have to grumble and weep and complain their way out of it.
Orphaned as a child, Garrett spent his youth on the streets surviving as a sneak-thief and pickpocket. After exhibiting a surprising degree of perception by noticing one of their agents he was recruited into a secret organization dedicated to observing and maintaining stability in the City, The Keepers. He was given initial training in the arts of stealth and subterfuge practiced by the Keepers, but found that it was much more profitable to make use of these skills as a thief than to continue working for the Keepers as an agent.
Yup, seems to be the gist of it. Garrett don't give a fuck and just likes stealing shit, that's how it should be in a game called "Thief."
no, garrett needs to be a conflicted restless soul whose mind is brimming with angst and regret!
he steals because he's trying to replace the love he never had!
just wait until his oscar winning moment when he finds that he accidentally stole his estranged fathers health insurance just before his operation!
Lots of overly 'fleshed out' characters nowadays. Taking Hitman as an example, that didn't really do the game any favours. You just wanted to be a fucking hitman and kill people at expensive parties and shit. But noooo you had to go on a bloody crusade to prevent some girl from going down the same path as your own tortured life as a badass hitman.

Wasn't that more because he felt he owed a debt to Diana after she saved him and he then killed her? On topic, new Thief looks ok, but I just remembered I still haven't finished Thief 3.
Wasn't Garret's story in the previous games essentially "I'm a greedy asshole who doesn't trust anyone because last time I did I lost a fucking eye" ?

No, it was "I'm a greedy asshole who doesn't trust anyone. Also, I lost a fucking eye."

Well I guess that's one thing he has in common with the developers.
I would kinda prefer Garrett to just be the smug kleptomaniac that he was in the past three games. If they're going to change his personality, story, and have a different voice actor, why not just make a new character all together?
I like how they think brand recognition will help them with a brand that is mostly recognized by hardcore fans.
Seriously, how hard would it have been to make a "game inspired by thief" instead of using the same universe and ditching everything good about it?

Because they think if they don't slap an established franchise on a new game it won't sell, like Donte and the DMC reboot.

I don't think it is
[sp]If you recall at the end of thief 3, he catches a child trying to steal from him. Is this Erin?[/sp]
Please, for the love of god. Don't make Garretts personality angsty, they already messed up his design.

I don't want hammy ass romance in the game for fucks sake.
You do realise that if they just took Thief 1 2 or 3, gave it HD graphics but made it an 1:1 copy of everything else and then released it; it would not sell very well.
I was blown away by how well developed the world and factions were in thief.
To throw all that out the window is not a good move, you could so easily draw from it to make your game better instead of ditching it all which defeats the god damn point of using the brand in the first place and shits on the original work.
I like how Garrett was always the loner who wanted nothing to do with anything, but fate always found a way to drag him into things. (In universe it's literally fate; prophecies are made about him and he always fulfills them, no matter what he does to try to avoid them.) I hope they don't fuck that dynamic up because that's the core of Garrett's character.
Story seems so cliché
